i like the rain. because it NEVER rains here, I noticed that the first days worth of drainage was black.... now all the same overflows are clear so i'm happy this place is getting hosed down.

that said, i had some fun today driving around the valley. people all crazed at flooding off in the right lanes.... it was like my own personal super highway albeit under 8" of water.

colwater canyon, the road i take from the LA basin into the valley up and over the hills of beverly IS A MESS. Land and mudslides into the roads, basketball sized rocks in the middle of the road and a LAKE as you come down into studio city where old men in AMG 55's have to retune pace-makers.

the distant sound of sirens..... i hope everyone takes it easy.

That sounded kind of poetic

I live in Portland, have most of my life. I was in San Fran this last weekend, and I have to say, I was impressed by the rain. At one point we were eating breakfast in a cafe when it poured for about 15 minutes -- the water came up over the 6" curb and half way up the slanted sidewalk. We got very wet several times.

Many of the photos I took were just between rain showers: http://picasaweb.google.com/bhcmrovings/SanFrancisco#

Nice pics, RB! You're making me even more homesick...

Elias, you too. LA is a wonderful place right after a rain. The air, the ground, everything is clean, and if you time it right, there's still very few people out and about. Everyone is stoked to see sunshine again, and for a brief moment, it's not a crazy zoo, and you just... breathe.

No reports of bodies in the wash system yet, but there are usually one or two. It's pretty crazy about the amount of people that actually stay down there. I believe Nation Geographic did a documentary about them along with the local papers at one time or another.

For those of us who love the ocean, what you are describing is a disaster.

Yeah, I hear that - there have been many many times I've sat on the beach with my surfboard and watched a lovely post-storm swell wondering if the toxic and biological hazard exposure was worth such epic waves.

And by the way, I used to think LA was dirty, and scummy, and polluted. ...then I moved to DC. Ugh. This city is DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY.

I hear you. The east coast lacks a multi-generational surf culture which has helped bring awareness at least of the water quality issue out here.

Imagine the shit that flows from the rivers to the sea in DC or NYC after a rain?

it has to be hosed down, sooner or later. Surf's ugly now anyway - choppy and brown.

Newsom - when the sun comes out for good (in April, maybe), drive to Georgetown and rent yourself a kayak at Thomson's. You'll find that there is something good about D.C.

I've seen the Potomac after the rain, it's hideous. Dark, dingy green-brown. Visibility of about an inch.

It DOES in all fairness get to be quite pretty when the weather is nicer, as Peter has shown... I'm definitely looking forward to spring, with the cherry blossoms, and shimmery pretty water and all.

Kayaking is fun, and I'm lookin' forward to doing some out here - it was too hectic in October when we got here, and by the time we got moved in, it was too cold. Spring/summer will be fun.

I'm also jonesing for some fishin'. I mean... None of these out here....

...but I hear the Chesapeake is pretty awesome too.

I spent most of my growing-up weekends in Annapolis (when there wasn't a horse show). Charter a little boat this spring and head out into the Bay. Spend the night on Kent Island (MD). Visit St. Michaels and the Crab House. Then head out to the Eastern Shore. You'll soon love being so close in DC.

i loved surfing here, it's mostly a winter thing tho.

not many waves in the summer but sometimes.

our water also gets closed down from time to time due to pollutants.

i always just hope to not come down with trench dick the next day.

One can only hope it will rise from the ashes like the Phoenix.

Oops. Isn't there a rule about walking the water crossing before you drive it? ;) Wonder if the synthetic rope broke because it got bound up in the winch mechanism? I don't think the water pressure and the weight of the truck alone would have done it.

There were 4 water rescues here, and unfortunately one little boy washed down stream after his family tried to cross a flooded wash. They also rescued what they called a camper out by one of the rivers. I think he was actually a homeless guy living in the river bottom. I don't know how many rescuees will be charged with the stupid motorist law, that's normally reserved for Scottsdale soccer moms and testosterone bound guys driving trucks with 4ft lifts.
