Ah-huh!

I've been bummed by not having enough destructive tools at hand. And, since the need of one arises in the midst of the action, you just keep trying every which way to get around it, instead of washing your hands, putting on some sociable clothes, and driving to your closest tool outlet...
All too familiar.

Pussy! When you're going to buy new tools, why get cleaned up? Like the guys at Harbor Freight care. For good tools, those are delivered by my chrome crack dealer (Matco man), or the Antichrist (the Snap-On man according to SWMBO).

It's funny, Thom and I are going to be doing his rad arm bushings and panhard bushings tonight. Hopefully this Chicago rust bucket doesn't give us the same trouble yours is. So far, he has never been stranded at my garage. I'm pretty surprised.

ok Paul...salt in the wounds

Steve Rupp and I tag teamed mine last night...removed the poly radius arm bushings and installed stock rover ones and did the panhard bushings.

start to finnish was about a hour...my truck lives in IL and is driven all yr so it see's the salt big time.

I have to admit when the 4th bolt came out I smiled and told Steve "we are now past the PT point. :D

yes I feel lucky

Thom, Your truck is blessed, mine possessed!

The sad thing is that a coupla weeks ago, a client was sitting on the porch with SWMBO and I and I was quoting him book times and she demanded I add an hour for rust. I gloated big time when I got both of them done in less than book time.

Having the correct tools for the press helps more than you can imagine.

Looks like hte same socket i use for the rad arms, 3/4 drive right?. Instead of using the press plates though i use a piece out of my ball joint press kit. the bushing drops into it real nice. What's the piece with the threaded rod for though?

No, no, no.

The socket is a high-clearance oil pan socket. Allows the use of a real wrench to remove stubborn drain plugs.

The other is a die for pressing bushings out and then back in. When pressing out, place the the two dies on the threaded rod and pass the rod through the bushing and press it out. When pressing in, place the new bushing between the two dies, one die acts as a guide to start the bushing straight.

When you begin removal of the bushing, the movable die can be used to ensure the press plates are set to allow the bushing to pass through.

I have a complete set of these for panhard rod, radius arm and trailing arm. I'll be making a set for upper A-arms soon as I have a job where I'll need them. Now, to get the lathe set up again after the move.

This is the job that prompted my purchase of the variable speed Milwaukee Sawzall years ago. It's magical :bigok:

I'm on at least the third set of these bushings and have never been able to get the bolts out of the sleeve ... in any kind of a "normal" manner.

I've got the same press that you've shown, PT, and it has always easily pressed the old bushes out (with the cut off bolts still in the hole) and installed the new ones.

The Disco could use new ones right now ... I'm not in the mood to do the job though. It needs to cool off here ... maybe in November ;)
