My 03 D2 HSE needs new oxygen sensors, and emmision control sensors. The oil was just changed, and the car driven 600 miles. Once the destination was reached, I parked----

Started the car up and accelerated to hear a rattle, knock, click noise that speeds up as I accelerate, or when at a dead stop its a subtle Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick Tick----It doesnt do it all of the time, but 80% of the time.

If anyone has any trouble shooting ideas, ideas of what it may be and how serious it is or if it could be bec of the 02 and EC sensors. please let me know!

Thanks in advance, Mitch

Just an FYI,

a buddy of mine with a 03' D2 had what seems to be a similar ticking, you could hear it when you came to a stop and it would change tone when you shifted between PNDR

Turned out to be sticky/bad lifters...hope yours is something cheaper/simpler

Mine is a 2003 SE, same sort of sound, but only when cold once she warms up it goes away? Ideas would be great, especially cheap ideas.

00Disco - could be bad or sticky lifters as was already noted, mine is going in for the same noise, it is a slight tick at N, then with drive it increases.

cebo99 - yours is different, yours is most likely the SAI, secondary air, happens on cold startup to control the amount of emmissions, should go away after about 72 seconds...

Hey guys---I have gotten some feedback from a service guy at land rover, he said it could be a number of things (without having to pay 200 bucks for them to check it out)
1.Heat shield is loose and rattling
2.bad catalyst (piece inside is rattling)
3.exhaust leak

I jumped underneath the vehicle today and took 2 pics with my cell phone, I used a small wooden rod putting one end up to my ear, and the other to various parts of the exhaust, when I put it on the piece you see pictured it was obvious that the obnoxious rattle/klatter was coming from this part. It is the larger round canister part of the exhaust, directly under the drivers side floorboard.

When the car starts it automatically starts, sounds almost like a knife in a coffee can being rattled around, its not obvious while the car is driving, but once to a stop/slow roll, you can hear it again with the windows down. The truck almost sounds like a DIESEL engine somewhat when at an idol.

Land Rover recommended that if it turns out to be a bad cat, I could have a muffler shop weld a universal piece into place to save on money. If its the heat shield of course easy fix. and if its an exhaust leak I figured I could have the gaskets replaced at a muffler shop for around 150.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? Thanks for the help to anyone with knoledge.

Use 10:40W oil for a start...these motors are not dohc Japanese super tight tolerance engines...my 04 also had a slight tick...and I had a 99 before that...same deal. Higher viscosity oil shut them both up permanently. In the 1960s when Rover first started manufacturing these, 20:50W was the rule of the day...that's what I use in my MGB....made the mistake of trying 10:30 in that car once....sounded like it was full of nails!

I have an 03 Disco I bought maybe a year ago, shortly after I got it I started hearing the same noises. I researched many late nights trying to find a solution and I was stumped...was about to tear into it when I dumped in a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. Low and behold the engine quited within 200 miles. I know I probably got really lucky with maybe a little build up in a few of the lifters or just one not sure...but hell it is worth a shot. Let me know if any of you have tried this and had good results...I just came back from a 3K trip to Kansas and back with no more issues what so ever.

I also continually use Castrol 20-50 Syntec Blend with the K&N oil filter, may be a little thick if I lived up north but living hear in Florida its what I run in all my cars and seems to work very well.

Its my CAT---I took it to mineke, they quoted me 400 to replace the cat with a new one, unless land rover covers their cats for more than 70,000 miles. Anyone know if they do?

Federal regs require them to be warranted for 80K or eight years.

On more than one occasion, I've had trucks/cars brought to me that were within 500 miles of warranty expiration and it was cheaper to flatbed to the dealer than pay for new exhaust.

You just got veyr lucky my friend, now, check your front driveshaft!

X2 on that... LR North Point replaced my whol Y-pipe at around 70K miles for free.
