stoopid question maybe...

im fixing to take my rear diff out here in a little while to see what is causing all the noise...anyway, i dont have a lift so what i was wandering is can i just jack up one tire at a time pull the axles completely out then put the tires back on? i have never had to pull an axle so i didnt know if there would be probs putting the axles back in...

this way the truck can sit on its wheel while i work underneath....i really really dont trust those jack stands!!

good good good....thanks gentlemen!

also, with both tires jacked up...parking break on...the rear tires spin freely (in opposite directions) while the driveshaft does not move...is this normal???

pt...what r we talking here...50...100 lbs??

yes and if it makes no noise when you do that...might be a bad pinion bearing or ring and pinion...because thats all thats not spinning

thirds members weigh about 45 lbs

no noise like this...only when the ds is on and spinning...does it on accel and decel with the addition of vibes at the half way position @ high speeds! u joints are (seemingly good) although they dont all grease anymore!

thanks for the QUICK replies!!!

how much am i looking at for ring and pinion and bearing??

ok damnit...i got the sucker out and have included some pics...

dont really know what im looking at here but all looks well to me! no visible wear on any of the gears...only thing i can find is that there is a very very slight click..or play when i wiggle the pinion shaft. the pinion bearing looks and turns evenly although it is hard to see! i do have the bearing and will prob try to put a new one in while it is out...will i be able to w/tools around the shop?? i forgot to take that damn pinion nut off before i pulled the diff so i know that will be damn fun to get off...any ideas on that one? i do have a large bench top vice...i will rty to rig something with that.

so wtf?? my thoughts are possibly just the pinion bearing...is there anything i dont know or need to be looking at??

ok...ive got the diff off and now how do you get the pinion shaft out to replace the bearing?? is this the point where you need an press?? also is there an inner and an outer bearing here?? looks that way...

well...at least im learning about diffs :D

looks just like mine did when i took it out, looks fine to me. That half shaft has a tendancy to crack but you will see it and based on that pic it hasen't.

Ring and pinion look fine. You may want to look back at your u-joints and replace them, they are cheap and if you've done your diff easier to do. You don't need a press just use an socket and a hammer just be carefull pounding it out not to hit off the weight. My front was siezed but couldn't tell until I got it out.

*edit* by the way, if you take out the pinion an ring you'll have to get the backlash redone and you need special tools to do it. You can take off the bearing from the other end I believe.... a bearing would do it at all speed though and would make a sound all the time?

so...i just bang on the end where the pinion nut goes with a socket over it?? i clarify because i have tried this a couple of whacks and no go...just making sure that i need to be more agressive with it before i destroy something...

all i ahev done thus far is pull the diff out with the ring still attatched...

i'd check the backlash before taking it apart, at least put some pressian blue on the ring and check the pattern if you cant see it by wear alone. the nut on the end of the pinion is usually torqued to like 125 ft. lbs. so i'll take some reefin'.

A socket over it? Pull the nut. You have to knock that shaft out. If the case is sitting on the ears that the carrier goes on, the pinion will be up. It sometimes just falls out. Pull the flange off. Assuming you have no kind hammers of lead or brass, put a 2x4 over it and whack it with a hammer. It should pop right out. There are spacer(s) in the middle which are critical. Also, if you have rear u-joint instead of a rubber coupling on the driveshaft, there'll be a spacer between the flange and the forward bearing. A wood bench is a nice place for this job. Or on a piece of plywood on the floor. Cushion the blow when the pinion falls out.
