bought a 97 with 145k
needs a head gasket, has really loud air leak thought it was the cracked manifold that i just replaced but it wasn't, the air i coming from the head right above the spot where the crack on the old manifold was at.

so i am thinking about pulling the motor and doing it right

will i have more in parts to rebuild than i would if i bought a different motor ($2250)

which shop manual would be the best for the job

thanks Matt

does the 2250 include installation ?

If not what does the installation run you?

Is this new engine rebuilt or brand new?

2250 does sound bad to me if you consider a head gasket job might cost you close to the same. Plus what else will go bad on it?

I got my brand new short block 4.0 from a guy I call Rover Mohamed (800.274.4830) for less than $2000. Although the last time I spoke with him he said the prices have gone up a lot.

so would a new 4.0 bosch long block for 3895 be reasonable

i can get a used long block for 2250 less than 75k

Screw the 4.0 and install a 4.6! I did that just this past summer and the power increase is outstanding. I procured a 4.6L from roverparts.com.

good luck.

The sky is falling, my truck needs a headjob! Nobody has ever done a headjob and driven the truck thousands and thousands of miles afterwards.

If the engine has good oil pressure and compression, just replace the cam and have the heads worked over.

The sky is not falling and you will rapidly go over budget trying to do things the right way. I'm already over budget on my engine and I was just gonna have the heads resurfaced, now I'm into having to replace valves and springs.
