Job best left to a shop. Replacing seals doesn't always fix leaks etc. Worn sector shafts will just rip them again and you are back to were you started.
Reco ones would be a better option in IMHO.

Seal Replacement

Will,

Most steering box issues are thought to be in the seals but are actually internal.. I have seen quite a few seal replacements blown out within a few miles. I would recommend either purchasing a rebuilt unit from a reputable company like Meridian or buying a new one. I purchase one from Meridian 3 yrs ago for my personal truck and it blew up this year..They replaced it with no questions asked. I have also installed 3 Meridian boxes on other trucks and the customer have had no repeat problems.

Best of luck

I started to rebuild a box and discovered a chewed up sector shaft and bearings.

Put a used unit in then. Two years later I got a Meridian rebuilt which works fine for me.

I would not do a seal job and call it rebuilt.

Hey, anyone want to buy a seal kit?? ;)

FWIW - just got one from Meridian, it's four blocks from my work. The price was something like $295, +$160 core, +CA sales tax. The website - meridianautoparts.com; they don't sell parts online, though.

Couldn't find any past stories about replacing boxes - any caveats there? How major a PITA is to pull the pitman arm?

I had a GM pitman arm puller that I had to modify a little to get my pitman arm off. I obtained a box with the pitman arm that I needed from an 89 RRC. It came off that steering box fine but wasn't so easy on the disco. I ended up spreading the puller apart and almost breaking it. It finally came off but snarfed up the threads on my box a little. I was able to grind down the snarfed threads and get the nut on. Thank god it was only 2 or 3 threads at the bottom. The nut went on past the grinded section. All is fine now.

What are you guys using to pull that pitman arm?

pitman arms are a snap....

put my large(have 3 sizes) pitman arm puller on...crank up the tension...and smack it on the side of the arm right next to the shaft with a hammer

snap it all falls to the ground in a blink :D

Replaced input and output shaft seals twice before getting smart and deciding to buy a meridian box. No leaks so far after two years. (Of course I also replaced all hoses, reservoir and new pump as well as they were also leaking) ;)

Used my large pitman arm puller like Thom. I also pre-soaked with Wurth Rost-Off prior to cranking on puller and a sharp hammer rap.
