I'm thinking of doing some major R&R on my '95 with 268K miles on clock.

Engine: I'd like to go either 4.6 (or diesel???)
rebuild tranny
new xfer case

Everything still runs fine, leaks-aplenty though. I'd be willing to drive it to a shop pretty much anywhere in the country (lower mainland USA, that is) to get it done.

Since "Pimp My Ride" has been ignoring me for the past few years, I'm going to have to fund this endeavor myself.

How much am I looking at for the whole thing? I'd like to keep the total amount to around $15K (I wonder if I could find a black on black DII for that much??? :) ).

I posted something similar to this 2 years ago, so maybe I'll just keep driving until something really breaks.

if everything runs right, use the 15k to buy 3 more dI's just in case it breaks down. these arent worth putting THAT much into it. i'm going to rebiuild the engine on my 96 (same miles as yours) sometime for the hell of it, but even it runs great still.

$15K, while a sh!t load of cash to put into a D1 is not enough to have a professional diesel conversion done. It may get you a light engine/trans rebuild and a serious cleaning/detailing and rebuilding/repairing of the structure though.

I just finish doing a 3.0TD diesel conversion in a 2000 4wd Toyota Tacoma. Imported the motor/trans/transfer and harness/small parts, had new drive shaft made, made new cross-members, new radiator etc etc etc. "Built" the wire harness... got it so everything in the truck functions - and more importantly LOOKS AND RUNS stock and factory.

This was an "easy" conversion in that the Toyota systems are "simple" compared to a Disco, even a D1.

We did remove the body, clean/blast/paint the frame and related, sound proof the interior and go through everything. The truck is "as new".

$15K was about the cost (almost 9K in parts alone), and the owner did a TON of the work himself. He's a good friend and a hell of a worker. I only charged him my time and parts etc. Had he not helped the cost would have easily been over $20K all said and done.

If you're really attached to the truck and want to rebuild it there are certainly places to have it done. Hell, I'd love to do it......... but I'm way up here in Maine. :) I also will be doing my own TDI conversion on the D2 this spring-early summer and then will be driving from here to the Yukon Canada to work a while, down to Sanfran Cali for a little and then spending most of the winter in Moab. So I'll be away for a bit!

I second PT's analysis that $15k doesn't buy a diesel, but does buy a lot of other stuff. I did a similar refurb last year for a customer-new 4.0, reman trans, and a host of off-road kit for about the same cost.
I'm in Hershey,PA and I'd be happy to offer a quote also!

macklow if you can do the work yourself use fultz' on rancho/95(all dealers use him for machine work). when i had an issue with my motor they saved me a shitload on parts by polishing the crank and getting rings seals and the like. i only needed a new cam. i live in vegas as well and while i dont like to take work from good quality reps such as pt i can give you some pointers if you want to do it yourself. just pm me.

Macklow, you have one of the best LR master mechanics in the Western US right there in your city. Go see Bill Goodman at Kinnsington Motor Cars on South Valley View, just across from the Rio. 702-222-0444. Bill will give you your best options, and I bet they do not include a diesel.
