Relocating AT cooler lines

anyone relocated or replaced the hard lines to the tranny cooler?

it's a 94 RRC LWB

maybe with braided?

i'm trying to tuck a winch between the frame rails and the winch is 2 inches too big. tray fits, but the winch housing and the hard lines to the cooler want to live in the same space.

can I cut the hard lines at the crossmember and use hose? forsee any problems...other that the truck catching fire when they burst.

thanks

The pressures encountered in an A/T application will never rise to the point that anything beyond a good 300 psi hydraulic hose is needed. FWIW-the blinging stainless power steering hose I had didn't last anywhere nearly as long as the NAPA store-fabbed hose has lasted.

There is no reason you can't cut the crimp ferrules off the steel lines and use hydraulic hose, IF there is a barb beneath the ferrule. If no ferrule, use a compression fitting and a hose barb. I have fittings to go directly from the steel to a hose barb, if you'd like.

thanks for the advice

so I could cut the steel line and use the section that runs underneath the radiator and apply a compression fitting?

that would seem straight forward. or should I just replace the current coolerhose in the engine bay and extend it's length all the way to the cooler? just not sure it would fit between the radiator and crossmember

PT...what's the best way to reach you?

And now another installment from "The Cheap Bastard". I had to re-route for the same reason as you -- needed room for the winch. I cut off the hard lines and soldered on copper plumbing pipe. I used an aftermarket cooler, a B&M I think, which uses barb fittings and hose clamps to connect the soft lines. It's been on there for about a year, hasn't leaked a drop and works perfect. Total cost was about $75. If it goes sideways on the trail I can just bypass it with a piece of hose and a couple clamps. Definitely not worried about getting stranded.

i got hose, clamps, and a pipe cutter. is there enough pressure to warrant compression fittings with hose barbs?

FWIW...it's a 14mm hard line.

Well, that's a decision for you to make. The risk is that without the hose barbs, the hose could conceivably slip off the hard line, puking ATF everywhere and lunching your tranny.

It's cheap insurance to me to use the compression fittings and hose barbs.

See, I told you guys I'm successfully breaking myself of the CB habits!

I moved the lines and the cooler up to keep the airflow on it at the same time. I used the holes for the horn and it worked out perfect.
