Hi - just threw in a new fan clutch in my D1 - Hayden 2786 Heavy Duty, and wow is it loud. Mine was shot (could stop it with your fingers when its warmed up) so thought I'd upgrade to the Hayden. It seems that thing is always fully engaged, even high RPMs, when warm, cool, all the time...

Is there a fan clutch that is closer to OEM unit as far as rating / noise? I know there's a few options others have tried here (Hayden, Imperial, Napa, Torqflo..heavy duty, severe duty, normal..) Otherwise I might just pick up a new unit.

Any thoughts / ideas / experiences with different brands?

Thanks for the replies. I hope it gets better over time (or I get used to the noise ;) ). Right now there's no difference in noise whether it's warm or cold. After more searching on the forums it looks like the Imperial 215157 is more like the original unit supplied by rover. Only $44 at Kragen so may give it a try.

I bet since these engines hit 200 degress so quick that most universal clutches would be on full all the time.

I agree with the "overdriven" comment below! I persoanlly know 3 people who replaced their clutches with the Torqflo for the Chevy Blazer. They were engaged all the time....ultimate my friends ended up replacing hoods, rediators, belts, etc... after their 15 year old plastic fans couldn't handle the perpetually locked clutch.... pop the fans literally exploded from the RPMs. I called Torqflo last fall and spoke to an engineer about this problem,. He has reccomended a clutch for the little 5 cylinder chevy/GMC pickups. It won't stay locked all the time. Persoanlly I opted for the one lsted for Rover at Autozone. I believe these are truly OEM parts, as it is ink stamped as an ERR/EECxxxx part. Works perfectly as it should! $113 at Autozone with a guarantee.

LOL, I have been running the P/N 215158 for 100K miles on a '95 Disco that has been beaten on with no problems.

The gentleman who gave me the hint for the part had to find the replacement as a result of his fan exploding with a stock fan clutch.

Stories of exploding fans with stock clutches are FAR more common than stories of fans exploding with aftermarket clutches. The fact is that these fans can and will explode regardless of the fan clutch used.

Again, when I put the same clutch on my Blazer, the vehicle for which it was intended, it made the same noise.

Mine pulls so much air I get forward motion @1500 rpm in Neutral...

Don't sweat the noise

I took out the Hayden since it was just too loud and seemed to rob power and put in the OEM from Autozone for $103 and what a difference. It's quieter but also runs cooler than with the Hayden. Not sure why that is since the Hayden seemed engaged the whole time and blew more air... Just thought I'd report my findings.

I also installed a Hayden heavy duty into my 97 D1 a year ago it does sound very loud compared to my old fan clutch. you do get use to it but it doesn't get any quieter as it ages you just get use to it. I am contemplating switching out the Hayden unit for the one that BA sells if it keeps the engine as cool as the Hayden unit.

Fan engaged at all times can put more load on engine and partially block natural air flow from moving through the radiator while vehicle underway.

everything before "and" is true, after - ?

Seriously, I'm not sure the velocity of a Land Rover in conjunction with the fan behind the radiator is sufficient to block airflow through what, overpressure?

The load was why I went down to the standard duty Hayden unit I listed; temps remain the same but with far less noise, drama, load-and cost compared to OEM.

Just for posterity Hayden 2634 fits OEM bolt spacing unlike the 215158 and similar.

I have one fan set up with the 215158 that I use in on summer whenever wheeling. The other with stock style URO. Latter is way quieter but cannot handle slow speed off road idling environment. Not recommending the URO-the Hayden will be next on the list.
