I am in need of replacing the Valve Cover Gaskets. 99 D1, Gems Engine.

Am I correct in assuming that I need to remove the plenum in order to get this done on the driver's side?

I am asking because I want to know if there is a gasket there that I will have to order as well. Just trying to get all the parts together before I start.

Also, are the bolts holding the valve covers down metric? I know they are 12 point, but I don't know the size. 7or 8 mm right?

Any advice, suggestions or links to other threads would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Plenum does not have a gasket. I use a heat and fuel resistant silicone ( red ). The bolts are 5/16" 12 point, I use 1/4 drive. You can pull plenum up and turn over without undoing the hoses, but it is easier to disconnect and would be worthwhile to replace the heater gasket on bottom ( a triangle looking gasket ) on the water jacket which heats the throttle body for deicing.

The left side can also be a bear as the heater hose can make for a challenge in getting the valve cover off around the rigid portion of the hose.

I'm a big fan of using high-tack for the upper plenum half. Make sure you get all of the residue off before trying to seal the plenum. While you're in there, consider replacing the hoses that go to the plenum deicer. FWIW, I've never seen the plenum deicer itself leak. If you need a gasket, lemme know, I have a pile of them as I've never replaced one!

When removing the valve cover gaskets, make sure you keep track of the little steel tubing doobers that surround the bolts to keep the gasket from getting mashed. You don't want one of them falling down into the crankcase and potentially fouling the rotating assembly (I might be a little paranoid about these things, but I don't want them in MY engine).

As always, you know how to get ahold of me.
