I need to buy a roof rack pretty soon. Want an original style but am having trouble finding one. If I have to settle for an aftermarket type what is everyone having the best luck with recently. Wilderness rack? (atlantic british) Brownchurch? Hannibal? (Which is just about out of my price range.) Any others I might not be aware of? There is a guy on ebay who builds racks, they sound pretty strong. Looking for personal experiences.

Thanks,
Tim

I've got a Garvin Industries Wilderness Rack. Like everything else it has it's ups and downs.
Pros:
-I can open both sunroofs (Although the rear wont slide all the way back)
-Good $. I got mine second-hand but www.4by4connection.com sells the racks and accessories and I have never had a problem ordering from them
-I like the look of it better than the Safty Devices (Not really a pro, just an opinion!)
-Same height all the way across
-Great Load rate. You can load at least 400 lbs up on it (But I would not recommend driving like that from NC to AZ in the dead of winter towing a trailer)

Cons:
-It's hella tall. Not many places other than the desert where something that tall would be viable.
-Multiple piece construction. Good in that shipping is tons cheaper but bad in that you have spots that are suseptible to loosening
-I do get a bit of "shimmy" when hitting rocky trails at faster speeds.

Not meant to push you one way or another. Just give you my experience and information. Granted I would love a Hannibal myself, but that's after I win the lottery! Happy Hunting!

x2 on the wilderness rack. not as hard to come by as a SD, and they are flat all the way across. i would also think the basic design makes it very easy to customize

X2 on this description. I picked mine up second hand off a guy pretty cheap. Only a little bit more costly than getting snowboard clamps for the roofrails so it served as the can carry a billion skiis and snowboards.

Thanks all. I did find a place to buy a new SD rack. The low style. Don't know if I want to go that route as I have sunroofs, even if they don't work right.

Thanks again,
Tim

Actually, you can probably get both roofs to open all the way on the Wilderness... I would just have to move the entire rack back another inch. Im just too lazy to bother with it seeing as I have no seats in back anyways! :p

well. when my 98 was stock, i got to 350 miles when the light would come on.

lifted it OME HD and put on 235/85s and trimmed front bumper. would get to about 300 if i remember correctly.

added my rack to that and got sliders and diff guards, i think it dropped maybe 15 per tank. EDIT - originally said 15, i think it was more like 20-30 cause i vaguely remember always trying to push it to 3 hundo.

lifted it RTE 3" and slimline bumper and rear RTE bumper and winch and switched to natos over alloys and 285 mud terrains. i get like 230-240 at best now. generally a lot shittier.

just did a 1000 mile road trip to MS with 800 lbs extra weight and it was windy as shit the whole way. I got 204 miles per tank.

all of those are unconverted from bigger sized tires so you can do the math. judging by roadside mile markers it looks like i lose about 1/10th a mile for every mile that i travel. so when i get 220 its really 242(am I correct in thinking this?)

doesnt drop 40-50 miles, but doesnt help. adds a lot of noise. I hear the tire hum and and wind noise off the roof. Luckily those are the only noises.
