Roto Flex Problems

Installed a new aftermarket roto flex on rear drive shaft and got less than 5000 miles on it before it started vibrating. It has deep cracks in it and is getting replaced with OEM this week end. I'm looking for input from the D-web knowledge base: Did I do something wrong or are the aftermarket parts junk when new?

Did you install it so that the thick portions are under compression during normal driving?

Honestly I can't say. I need to look how I did it. I guess there is a 50% chance I did it wrong... so in reality that means there is a 100% I did it wrong. I'll have the pages printed from D2 workshop manual with me this time.

get rid of it altogether and put the real u-joint in with the new shaft.no difference in the ride or handling. if anything, it is better than the rubber donut. i can see how the rubber one would be easier to repair on the trail but then again, maybe the real u-joint can handle the trail better and won't need servicing in the middle of the woods...get dirty

Use only genuine or GKN - branded joints, many aftermarket are really cr*p.

Look up this thread in the Discovery section:

"Rotary flex vs. u joint".

I posted some pictures towards the end of that thread.

It's about 4 menu pages back from here.

My heavy duty roto/joint has done 55000+ miles with no problems.
