Why does the Benz seem better?

That's why. In theory, anyway.

I've never driven a OM617/1.9 TDI Land Rover.

UPDATE:

I got to see some updated work to this wannabe pristine princess. It's not so pristine( surprise, rust).
Anyway, hopefully Doug will post pics of the Audi drivetrain going in it. I've never seen an IFS setup in a classic yet, but there's always a first.

Well, here's some pics of the carnage.

This is what happens when the mud flap brackets corrode a little and some ass-hat slathers bondo and undercoating in a can on the cracks... then moisture get inside under the shitty ass sound deadening. EASY fix though as it really is just inside surface crap mostly and has not spread. So the truck to *me* is still "rust free" really. Minor. But when you attack it with a air needle scaler a lot comes off.

Next is the D2 dash - just set on place, not anywhere near final yet. But it fits great as do the console, seats (with modified lower brackets) and even the door panels are a good fit with minor tweaks.

NEW wire harness.... ahhhh to get rid of ALL the rover wire/relays and ECU's!! So nice.

And this *may* be going on till I have enough time to do the TDI swap - yes I know, a lot of people will scoff at this.... whatever. Ha ha ha ;) I will probably just swap the TDI in but if it starts getting close to time for the winter romp I will just do this so i can go play!

And lastly it's not the front but the rear - I've always felt that the rover rear suspension could be improved and I happen to have this big boy Audi A8 rear subframe and diff. These will hold some serious power, the diff ratio is 4.11 and the independent arms should be able to handle higher speeds on rough roads well and the flex off road overall should be FAR better since the double a-arms keep the wheel level and we all know that will mean serious traction since ALL the tire tread will be able to stay on the ground. Why do you think hummers have independent suspension? Duh!? Plus it will sit lower and a lower center of gravity is better for the wheeling I do. You may not understand but what I do is HARD CORE and S.Y. and I came up with this plan together so you know it will be AWESOME!

I always thought Rovers got high marks for their rear suspension design.

Nah, he's just turning this RRC into a drift machine. Doug already filled me in on the "real" plan for this truck. Maybe it's best you guys just forget this truck ever existed.

Found the same shit in my '88 RRC a couple weeks ago, on a whim I checked every D1 parts truck I have and the mudflap brackets are doing the same shit. Its a shame really, but easy fix if you catch it in time. What kind of air needle scaler are you using.

Yes - they ALL do it. And to be honest I noticed the undercoating the day I picked up the truck from you. I could see it was a minor issue so it was far from a concern.

Cornwell inline short style. Love it, small and light but does a really great job. Wasn't real expensive either.

Of course it's 4.8 liters of axles and transmission eating torque. :)
It will fit, kinda. Ha ha ha. Half tempted to do it "just because" but the VW makes more HP, not a ton less torque (about 60 less) and has such similar rpm range and weight as the Rover V8 it makes far more sense. But that Isuzu is just sitting in my back yard........ Fun.

I am about 1 or 2 steps from putting an Isuzu motor and trans hooked to the LT230 - I am liking the idea of decent power but ZERO need for electronics once she's fired. ;)

Made some more progress "gutting" today. This fall has been really busy in the boatyards with the storms and all.

I am tempted to list the motor and related for sale but also kinda want to toss the motor in that Audi i have here. ha ha.

Me too. Still on the fence with TDI vs Isuzu for sure.

The thing is the TDI could be used in so many applications and I have a lot invested in the motor so I'm tempted to save it for a project that can't fit the Isuzu or most other good diesels (like an Audi/BMW or smaller series truck or?)

Obviously I'm a fan of Isuzu motors and have too many options. LOL.
