School me on Chantix!

Worked for me, some people don't like it. You take it as you continue to smoke, after a while the pleasure from smoking diminishes and after a couple of weeks, smoking was just a hassle without pleasure. Some people complain of all sorts of side effects, for me it was just a little insomnia. I felt kinda like a sissy for taking a pill to help quit smoking, but I decided who cares if it does indeed help you quit smoking. For me, it was so easy, it felt like I was cheating.
I smoked about 3/4 pack a day for close to 30 years. I fyou are halfway motivated to quit, I stronly recommend asking your doctor about it. Good luck.

Works! I quit smoking completly in 7 days and quit the Chantix a few days after that.

Side Effect 1. Wierd dreams.
Side Effect 2. Don't take on an empty stomach.

I still get an urge but not bad and thinking about all the money I save on cigs that I can spend on good scotch solves that problem in about 2 seconds.

Edit: One good side effect is my wife doesn't bitch at me about smoking anymore.

I was on Chantix for about 3 weeks. I had such pain in my arms and legs Doc had me stop. I did have the dreams, too, which were pretty good, but the pain in my bones was pretty bad. :(

Worked for me. Went through two of the three Chantix cycles. I had weird dreams and X2 on taking it on an empty stomach. I still get an urge here and there but as time passes those come less and less. I would highly recommend trying it.

Ultimately, I think you have to be in the mindset that you really want to quit.

Good luck!

The first time Chris took it, it was working well, then due to insurance mess he stopped for a while. The second time he started it, he went into a massive depression, would go to work, come home, go straight to bed until time for work the next morning. He stopped taking phone calls, leaving the house, and spending time with friends. He quit taking it and was fine in a few days.

An easier way to quit smoking is to just eliminate cigarettes. Only smoke cigars, a pipe, or dip. Eventually, you'll get sick of those and just stop, except on special occasions. :p

Worked for me... I tried everything else in the past, wellbutrin/zyban, gum, patch, etc.. I smoked for about 15 years, and even lost my father to lung cancer, and was unable to quit.

My experience was similar to group captain mandrake's ... basically you just take it and still smoke, then you just have less and less of a desire to smoke.. the action is still there, lighting the cigarette, and inhaling, but it doesn't do anything for you.. just kinda tastes crappy.. it gives you no satisfaction... after a couple of weeks you find yourself not really smoking anymore. I took the pills for about a month... my insurance didn't cover it, so it was expensive [~100 something/mo ... which is actually far less than cigarettes, at least in NJ], but worth it. I made sure that before I stopped taking the pills I did everything I could to 'crave' a cigarette... get drunk.. eat mcdonalds... go offroading.. etc.. all the times/places where I'd usually smoke a ton.

I know of at least 2 other people locally who quit using it.

As for side effects ... my only real complaint was sleeping... it was hard to fall asleep and hard to wake up.. I *never* sleep through an alarm [unless im hungover], and while on chantix, I slept through my alarm a couple of times.

Herein lies the problem. I haven't smoked for about 3 years. I started using smokeless to help myself quit. Now I am thinking if I quit smokeless I will be smoking again within a week.

As for the dreams... I used the patch for a while and I did have some rather vivid dreams. Unfortunately they were about night slashers and Zombies instead of strippers.

I stopped using the patch because they wouldn't stay on at work and they didn't seem to be strong enough.

I'm in school working on getting my pharmD (doctor of pharmacy) and have been a retail pharmacy tech for the past 3 years or so, so I might be able to give some nonofficial advise.

I know a lot of people have mentioned they've had very good luck with it. I know some others who it has not worked for, not work for in the long run, or did not like the side effects and therefore stopped. If you read through some of the clinical trials it's been proven to work better than the placebo. The side effects are there but usually in relatively low occurrence and not significantly higher than the placebo in many cases. Side effects can be treated though. Long term though, after stopping the drug, its efficacy is a little questionable.

Chantix is pretty expensive, probably upwards of $120 a month if you don't have insurance/your insurance doesn't cover it. There is no generic available yet.

Welbutrin (Bupropion) is a cheaper alternative. It's very common on prison formularies because its dual use as an antidepressant and smoking cessation drug (though it also has a longer risk of side effects). Chantix, however, has been shown to be more effective and work better in the long run.

I attached some reading material on Chantix, highlighting the important stuff. I think it's worth a shot if you really, truly, want to quit.

Been smoke free for almost 5 years now thanks to chantix. Tried the patch multiple times, gum, etc. Didn't wind up needing the third course of chantix, had virtually no side effects and couldn't be happier.

Have you tried using Snus instead of regular dip? In the meantime, until you decide to give it up for good, at least its got far FAR less carcinogens, as its steam cured rather than fire cured.

I am yet to see a single person who gave up dip.

Do I count? I did a tin of some whimpy stuff in college, then progressed onto a stronger variety. On the first dip, I got super dizzy and barfed up a stomach full of breadsticks with nacho sauce. Never touched the stuff again.

1. Made cigs taste like crap
2. Grinded my teeth at night till one cracked off
3. Felt like my tongue doubled in size
4. Had weird dreams and could not sleep well
5. The irritability I experienced made me want to quit job, marriage, etc.

I am down to 5 cigs a day right now. Quitting as of 1st of the year. Holding myself down to 5 is actually easy. In a week, down to 3, then done. Tried cold turkey and could not do it. Didn't even make 24 hours.

Funny with the dip, that scares me more than smoking does for some reason. The pictures and videos in health class of guys with half of their jaw bone missing kept me from dipping. The anti-smoking videos and pics didn't work to well for me. Oh well, gotta quit smoking soon, I wanna be around for my son as long as I can. I'll prob try the chantix sometime soon.
