I just leave mine off when I'm not actually using it. But it's easy for me I have a warehouse and a forklift so removing it's a one man job.

Your money your decision. I would hesitate to cut up a perfectly good SD and would consider a Hannibal. And then ask myself, do both trucks need a rack? Probably not.

Yeah, it seems like a crime to chop a good SD rack up but I'd almost rather that than buy a Rover Rack...they look good but still not SD...

Here's a better view of the height it could be:

Would it become useless without a high enough rail though?

whats so great about an SD rack? Looks the same as every other one i see running around town, but more importantly, as stated above, why do you need a second rack? for looks? I keep my ARB rack on the wife's rig, so that i can keep plenty of clearance on my beater.

I always thought that to be a good idea, especially since when Rover Racks was in Portland I asked them to build one for me. I provided a photoshoped image of a normal rack that I had made to look like the low version. I even drew up a "plan" for them and got a price quote.

Weeks past.

Nothing.

Emails.

Calls.

Then my photoshoped photo ends up on their web site and they say they are now offering a new lowered rack, etc, etc, etc... Then they moved to Florida and I didn't get a chance to burn down their shop.

I did it to mine years ago. Looks fine, is less noisy, and gave me .04mpg better economy. (last part is a lie) Go for it.

Well at least you haven't said you were going to use chicken coop flooring on your rack ... then the fashionistas would really be after you ;)

I think the rail is there for looks. Its not like you can rely on the rail for holding things on the rack, everything has to be tied down.

I chopped my SD years ago to allow my RTT to open out the side, people cringed but I could really care less. I have the rack to carry what I want not to fit in or look good. In my case I have long since given up both of those endevers. :D
