I'm sure next time, when I'm better planned budget wise, I will take Garretts advice-its good advice
for now I went with
http://www.okoffroad.com/

3/8" x 100'
Color: Signature Hunter Green
UV protection coated
Lock-stitched Class II splicing
10' abrasion guard included
Heavy-duty rope thimble with Class II locking eye splice, and heat-shrink cover
Extra-large terminal end, with rope heat-shrunk prior to being glued and crimped into the terminal.
$239.00 seemed like a decent price for it all at 100 feet
$20ish for 3 day delivery

It was priced right..done

Trade names are important. This is a product from another industry that has been recently adapted for our use. Each type of rope and material have been designed for a different application, none of which is pulling a Land Rover up a hill. Sure, it's going to work, but it wasn't what the manufacturers had in mind.

Off the rack, the materials aren't all-rounders. It's the combination of the materials, how they are treated and processed in the end, and how it's all put together that matter.

Any of these materials, woven properly, can pull a truck up a hill, but each has it's drawbacks. Recently, people have scrambled to come up with better ways to reduce the impact of these drawbacks. That lead to in-house adaptation.

Rope off a rack may not be too expensive, but as soon as the little guys start fucking with it themselves, it becomes very expensive very quickly.

Many polymers and treatments have trade names. You need to know your way around them if you want to know what you are buying. Recovery equipment is important to understand. It's just a rope and a hook in use, but unless you know how it behaves when stressed in different ways, even a rope can be very dangerous.

Any time you are within spitting distance of a massive object supported by string and shackles, you had better know just what sort of rigging you are using and why.

Cheers,

Kennith

Reminds me of a cook on an R/V Cape Hatteras, walking on deck in flip-flops with a fishing rod, and trying to stop a 2500-lb buoy suspended in the air from swinging in his direction... That was funny.

For those of you still on steel: even a few years old, its still a great upgrade from 5/16 steel line

the old one is in good enough shape to use, or sell, there is really nothing WRONG with it. I will sell it to someone if they want it or it can go to ebay. just burnin money.

Its about 90 feet of amsteel blue, asking $100 shipped if youre interested..message me privately for details. later today I'll take some pics of the line and toss them on an album on my gmail for you to 'ispect' if youre interested before it sells on ebay(stay tuned for linky)

you can see the scuffage and see for yourself, I'm not afraid to use it, but its IS used, just not used up

thanks all

No man, sorry, I didnt have an option, was tied up doing things that day. I know I said I'd try and come out and didnt make it, please dont take it personal! Would have loved to have come out and met ya! nothing to do with the rain. (Now, lightning here in Sedona, that will keep me in) I think I was working on a french drain in the back yard..

This is the link to what the boat is; don't remember if that is the same cook. The master was the 2nd mate back in 1999.
And this is the thing that was swinging around (no, that isn't me in the photo).
One of the rigging lines broke, leaving it flying all around the deck.

I know, I just like giving you shit about it. (you're not alone, I give my friend Sarah shit for not driving her Cherokee down from Flag too).
