serious accessories for LR3/Disco3

Hello Nathan,

Yes, the wheel is a BB6. Higher load rating than the OE rims (and a lot cheaper).

The tyre is a Cooper LT245/70R17 STT. I've got six of them, but only will swap the road spare around when I head off on longer trips into the desert regions.

I'm just about accessorised out now! need to stop and start saving my pennies.

Yeah, they're good tyres aren't they!

I couldn't go the way of 275/65R18's because our law here does not allow us to vary overall diameter by more than 15mm (3/5ths of an inch).

Two spare tyres are a must for any long distance outback touring (especially if you are heading out from Esperance, Jamo). And for the extended driving range with the long ranger tanks...most of the Disco 3 owners I know here in Australia have purchased the diesel model so the extra fuel goes a long way.

Today, I saw a prototype of what I believe is a bad-ass rack for an LR3. It is a full length rack, follows the lines of the LR3's roof and best of all, there's no plastic. Imagine a Safety Devices rack made for the LR3, and you get a an idea of how this thing looks. It has four light tabs in front and two at the rear.

Anyhow, the guy who is making these is looking for an LR3 to mount it to for a photoshoot. If you live in SoCal, and you need a roof rack, this is it. He just opened up his shop in Sherman Oaks and his website will be up with pics of the rack soon.

From the pics it look good. I have the following questions:

1) Per your previous posting, does it have the 4 light tabs in the front and 2 in the back?
2) Is it designed to allow the front sunroof to open fully?
3) I have the SD rack on my DII and it is doing great with no rust. Can you give me some details regarding the design and construction of the rack?
4) Do you have a pic looking down on the roof? How many rails running vertically and horizontally?
5) Estimated cost?:patriot:

Thats my LR3 in the photo. Answers that I remeber below:

1) From what I remeber yes 4 light tabs in the front and 2 in the back.
2) yes sund roof fully opens
3) I believe its welded steal and than powder coated
4) no pic looking down The rails run in a box pattern from the sun roof back with about a 5 to 6 inch pattern.
5) You gotta contact them for a price.

Im very new to land rovers but its seemed like a great great product.

Hi Nathan...

Sorry for the delay in responding, guys. I have some more pics of the rack he forwarded to me. He's up to his ears with a few projects, so I offered to post 'em. To answer a question about price, since it's his product, I can't speak for price. However, for being a brand new, unique product, not used, and completely original, it's very much worth the prices I've heard being thrown around.

Also, I offered to fix the phone number on his website, so if you've been trying to call the number that was listed, it's now fixed.

http://www.offroad.us

I'll inform him of the Discoweb posting protocol, i.e., 5% of sales to DWeb. Just make sure to mention you saw it on Discoweb for them to know. If you're interested in a very unique rack for your LR3, I'd suggest getting it directly from him while you can. Derek is working on a few distribution deals and when they mark it up, it's going to be a significant price increase.

I can sum up the look and quality (see welds on last pic) of this rack in one sentence:

It's the rack SD should have made.

Javier

BTW, that's Omid's LR3. The LR3 in the previous post belongs to Jonah. Thanks, Jonah and Omid!!!

Questions about the rack

First, the web page link is taking me to a dead end.
Second, from the picture it looks like there are no horizontal or vertical bars over the front sunroof. Am I seeing this correctly? If that is the case, then one would be losing alot of storage opportunity in my view (unless you put things directly on the sunroof). I am individual really wanting a rack like this one and even send an e-mail to a Safety Devices rep about every 4 months asking him when there new rack for the Disco LR3/III will be ready (He keeps saying 2007). In conclusion, I was really hyped on this rack opportunity until I saw the top view. Am I wrong?:patriot:

Hi,

You are seeing correctly, there are no bars due to the fact that there are no mounts in the front. Because the mounts are behind the sunroofs, any weight at the front area would be dangling, bouncing, regardless of who makes it :). Unless LR designs mounts in front of the sunroof, I wouldn't carry anything up there. Consequently, the front is used exclusively for lights, very lightweight.

Also, I posted the wrong URL, my apologies... the correct URL is http://www.urbanoffroad.us

Hello,

You are correct that there are no mounts included on the LR3, but of the pictures I have seen of the OEM Land Rover (plastic rack) Expedition rack, they provide a supplemental mounting bracket, so that their rack can be weight bearing all the way to the front. I am wrong..please everybody jump in?:patriot:

I'm sure Derek can make customizations that suits individual needs, you just need to place the order and tell him what you want :)

My only self-serving interest is that they stay in business for when I need them to fab my crazy ideas. The fact that they are only a few miles away from my house is all the more reason to want to see them succeed.

You get a completely unique rack that all other LR3 owners will be jealous of, I get to drive down and have him make a roof rack for my Series IIA. It's a win-win. Don't wait, someone else will get what's in stock and you'll have wait for the next batch.
