The auto industry and governments nightmare. Makes cash-for-clunkers seem rather ridiculous.

In 43 years and 540K miles your average car buyer would have gone through 10+ cars and a boatload of money with purchase, financing, taxes and insurance.

$3289 + ((540K miles/15mpg)*$1.50/gal = $57,289

10+ cars @ $15K each + 540K miles of gas is over $200K, probably over $250K

Cash-for-Clunkers? average of $4000 for 10 cars = $40K

Net loss - $200K+

That is cool and really green. Imagine how much power and material has been saved because she hadn't bought 20 new cars.

That is awesome.. I can't keep a vehicle more than about 4 or 5 years Tops. From 16 to marriage I was on the "New every Two" program.. I always had to have another car.. a nicer, faster, shinier... that lady is awesome.

I keep the car and trade in the women every two years. Cheaper that way. :)

I've been saying that for years. It's not only the new car that's harmful to the environment, it's the factory that they built for it, the forest they cut down to put the factory on, and the disposal of the car after it's no longer usable.

Go Rachel!! She is great! I love how she said she stays by the car when it's being serviced.

That's how I feel about my Disco...first car I bought after college, living on my own, paid for it on my own, got married in it, drove to the honeymoon trip and back, moved into our first house, etc etc. I hope I'll still have that truck even 20 years from now! Too bad I wasn't the original owner though.

On that note, I'll be going home tonight and fixing a few little things on her...

Reminds me of my great Aunt Hazel in Pasadena (the original little old lady from). She had a 1940 Ford she bought new, drove it until about 1966, then traded in on a Comet. I remember her saying she wished she'd kept the 49....lol.

Congrats! Will my `04 DII last just as long?

Well, I've been driving the same Rover since '72. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten those "lifetime" warranties on shocks, batteries and whatnot....:p

Man what a great car. I've got close to 300K on my DD an old 533i BMW. Every part has been replaced almost. Well the tranny is original but not much else.

I saw an old guy and his wife in a 59 Impala this morning. I wondered if the were the original owners, didn't appear to be a restoration. I had a old gal I gave an estimate to in SF years ago, her husband died in 1963 (this was like about the early 80's), she had a 56 Ford Crown Victoria in the garage under sheets in mint condition. I still wonder how much she sold it for.
