Ole Smokey is pretty darn close. Although they mix it down a good bit to make it tolerable. It's not anywhere near what you would get straight off the worm.

I don't drink it straight unless it's been aging for a while...otherwise, an "apple pie" recipe is pretty simple and brings it down to a tolerable 90-100proof.

No. I have seen 40 proof 'moonshine' in the stores. The legit non flavored shine will kick your ass. Which reminds me I haven't had any since Uwharrie a few years back

The one legit guy on the show, Tim, has his on the market. Think his has been cut down? I've not looked it up.

I have a jar of 100 proof "legit" moonshine I sip off of from time to time. Junior Johnson Midnight Moon with strawberries.

Depending on how the shine is made will depend on the alcohol by percent directly from the still. If the shine is coming from a pot still it will have a much lower percentage vs something from a reflux still. The more times you run the shine through a pot still the more alcohol you get. However, a reflux still can produce 96% alcohol in a single run. You can't drink 96% alcohol, it would eat your esophagus. You've got to cut shine with water. Every-once-in-a-while you can find shine that's 100-proof. But most of the stuff is 80-proof which is much more drinkable.

Do they still sell 190-proof Everclear? I know they do not in Virginia due to the alcohol content, so I would image it's the same deal with moonshine. Not sure about other states.

151 is the limit in most states iirc.

And the whole "if it's legit, it ain't real shit" idea is retarded.

Have you guys ever drank moonshine straight off of a pot still? It fucking sucks. It's good for nothing more than anticeptic and starting the grill.

It's nice to be able to mix it down and flavor it to have something to enjoy. I prefer to let it soak with fruit, or something similar to take the fire away but, still give it some heat.

Saying moonshine is like saying Vodka. There is good, bad, and ugly. Most stuff people sell you is around 100 proof, unless it's flavored. I still burn test mine, because my grandma told me too. The idea they are going to sell you shine that is pure is stupid. You couldn't drink it and they double their money buy cutting it with water to make it 100 proof. The flavored stuff can be good but some of it has so much juice in it you might as well drink Boones Farm. I make my own apple pie but I don't buy the flavored stuff in bottles, what's the point? Most of that stuff started with grain neutral spirits that "wild berry moonshine" is basically vodka. The "moonshine" label is a gimmick.

Not here. The nanny state keeps their hands off of sacred things like liquor proof. You can still get everclear here. It's handy for taking bumper stickers off your car or easing over crowding in high schools.
