I think we agree. If you're not going out prepared, when something goes wrong, take care of it yourself.

Yeah, you're right. I'm just in a pissy mood this weekend. Sorry for jumping on you about it. The trick to some of it is knowing the etiquette - some places out east will not look for you unless a family member has reported you missing/past due while other mtns out west often presume you're in need of help if not back by the time written in the register. So, planning to be out 5 nights, getting hurt the first, you better be ready to hang out for a while on our own. As minimal as I went sometimes, I was ready to dig or build shelter and all but once had food and fire in my pack. Even then, I could have crawled off Longs if necessary on the reseveres - it's only a short day hike in at least.

As a ski patroller in California,

I'm sure you've heard this one then, told to me and my girlfriend midslope by the cleanup crew at the end of the day on Killington a few years back:

"you know, 100% of all fatalities occur on the last run of the day....."

Being pretty tired, we didn't get the joke until sitting in the tub later ;) like oh, Duh!

Ok it looks like I am going to try and go skiing twice this december. Both of them are three day trips one at snowshoe, wv. and the other at breckenridge. Should I just try and get some used skiis or just rent them. I do try to go skiing at least once a year.

ive skied snowshoe and breck many many times. id say rent some demos. that way you know you're getting a decent pair of skis.

be warned....snowshoe trail are rated higher than breck trails. theres only 1 double black at snowshoe and its only like 30 yds long. all it is steep bumps. a trail on that type at breck woulc be rated a blue/black.

snowshoe is small and everything is at the top of the mountain and the run go down. no tree runs and average terrian park.

breck is huge and is always opening new terrian. breck is not my fav Co resort, but its fun. the runs are 4-5 times longer than snowshoe and youre going to be 4-5 times higher in elevation. prepare to be winded and drink lots of water.

good luck

Ok new subject. I hate wearing goggles while skiing but I think I will buy a pair this year since I now have a helmet but don't really know which ones to get. I was thinking either Smith or Oakley. I sweat pretty easily so they need to vent like crazy.

My friends were skiing A Basin and said got hit with some nice powder on the 28th. I am sure they all got hit with some good stuff though.

Bastards.

I was there on the 28th! Problem was all the snow came that night, I left the 29th! They reported like 15 inches that morning, I skied it all day the 28th though, It got crazy icy towards the top.

WEAR A HELMET!!!!

I just hope to God that this doesn't become mandatory with the ski areas.

The last thing I want is more intervention on my hobbies/sports.

I'm waiting for this helment concept to get to snow shoeing as a branch may fall and hit you.

Breck? There is no ski area called Breck. I lived there for four years and only posers called it Breck.

It's the Kingdom of Breckenridge.

I lived there from 81-85 and calling it Breck was a big no-no.

I still have my 207 Dynamic VR-27s sitting in the corner. I am sure they would be quite a novelty on the slopes today.

I spent 2 weeks at breckenridge last year, it was awesome... my 2 cents:
breck is fucking high... it took me a couple of days to adjust - by the way there is an oxigen delivery in town, the phone is on every breck map given at any store.. if you drink hard liq don't go up the stairs like I did... you will regret it LOL

rent, the shops there have top of the line stuff or even demos that are a bit $$ but some say worth it.

best lift ticket price at the Keystone safeway

good luck and wear a helmet!

Hey I still have some 208 Elan MBX GS skis in my basement that I was just looking at.

I still love the tele t-shirt that says, "If it were easy, they'd call it snowboarding."

Let's bring the long boards back!

I have an old pair of Atomic "honeybee" 225 long boards that would love to see snow again.
