buy some Volkl's and be done with it! Ski's are a great investment in my opinion, it allows you to get out so much more without having to worry about spending the money on rentals, you can get packages for under 300$ and they'll last you a while.

Helmets? At Snowshoe? Seriously?
The venue isn't the issue - trees and/or people and ice if you are inexperienced can provide fantastic head injuries. Maybe you haven't been down the backside in icey conditions very fast.

I do try to go skiing at least once a year.

Rent skiis, buy boots - however it's the wrong time of year to get boots unless you find some of last year's stock on super sale.

Rental boots still suck by comparison to your own. It's simply the nature of rental business and so much use in them.

What size are your feet....?

Snowshoe/Silver Creek in good conditions, can be great and there is new terrain since a couple yrs back. Longer drop than Winterplace as well and higher altitude - generally better conditions and less ice. No comparison.

Breckenridge - ah, nice but get over to Loveland one day for more of a high mtn and less people experience - after you have improved some, maybe next time out there. The high up cornices are so fun and provide a long run in. Breck is really pretty though.

I use a splitboard for my back country adventures... cross country skis and a snowboard all in one package. I ride a Venture Splitboard which is handmade in Silverton Colorado.
Last March I cross country skied up Yankee Boy Basin and then place the two skis together and then made my decent down Yankee Boy by snowboarding. Its a great setup for backcountry exploring.

I wear a 9.5 boot and have used a 160 cm ski lately. I will head to breckenridge the first week of December

How about the mondo size...? I have a pair of Salomon Force 9 boots ahrdly used that are 27.5 which is right at 9 - 9.5. They are way better than rentals and if they fit you, cheap is the word.

Split is cool for some applications but they do not "ski" anywhere as well as skiis and are slow as well. The fastest overall set up is AT or tele for rolling terrain and/or verying decent types after long climbs, the skiis are lighter than splits too.

Very true and definitely not the best descending ski setup... but the splitboard has been a godsend in my application as I used to have to snowshoe to the summit lugging my snowboard strapped to my pack which was very slow and took forever. Now I can carry all my camera gear and a tripod with the splitboard setup which was a big plus for me but I would only recommend the splitboard for people who want to do some serious back country snowboarding and wanted to throw the option out there.

Coverage can still be pretty sparse in December @ loveland. Definitely take a rental if you are going to ski the rocks, if the ridge is even open.

Good to hear someone yapping about winter I'm getting excited to hit Taos, for the first time, with my board this season...
