Smoke coming from dash

Drove to my girlfriends last night and parked it in her drive. Turned the truck off (D2) and hear a crackling noise in the dash and what seems like gurgling of water (the two may not be related). I listen a little closer, look around and see smoke coming from the driver side center dash vent. Smells slightly electrical but not acrid like a burning circuit board.

I quickly pop the hood and disconnect the battery, remove the stereo and look around but things seem fine in there. I *just* installed a Blitz iPod adapter in there the other day, thought it might be in that section but no smoke or burnt stuff. Left it unconnected all nigth just to be safe

Drove it home from gf's place this morning and its definitely still happening. Stopped at lights or when the truck isn't moving, I don't see much. But as soon as the car starts rolling I get slight cloud of smoke come up from the windshield vents onto the windshield that totally clouds the glass up. Like I said, its not acrid smoke, it barely smells, but its persistent.

The radio, lights, and HVAC all work as expected.

I've parked the truck and disconnected the battery for now, kinda dreading having to remove the dash. Did a search on here, seems "smoke dash" isn't a common issue, heh.

Any ideas bros?

PT: I heard a hiss and a gurgle last night in the dash. I guess the "smoke" could be steam... Funny thing, when I popped the hood I noticed that the coolant res was out of water.

Next question: How awful will be to change out the heater core? heh

I'm curious to hear about how difficult it's going to be to replace the heater core... I have the same gurgling sound from the passenger footwell, but luckily no smoke. I've lived with that sound for over a year but I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet soon.

I thought the steamy vents and gurgling sound behind the dash is a symptom of a blown head gasket.

had a heater core go on an old chevy cavalier years ago. basically a pop and then steam through the vents. it sounds like that to me. time to sell....
