Snorkel for Range Rover P38

As most already know goodies are scarce for the Range Rover P38, I have looked high and low for a snorkel with no success. I have debated Mantec / Safari and I don't like the fact the Mantec snorkels are metal. In a case of desperation however, you must do what is needed to achieve the goal.

I went to the Safari Snorkel site and discovered something interesting. I went to the Discovery II page for their snorkel, and lo and behold it seems the model they make for the DII will work. The air box and tubing is in same place on the Range Rover. I may just order one of these and see how it works. The Safari Snorkel model number is SS395HF and, here is the page on their web site:

http://www.safarisnorkel.com/docs/snorkel/ss395.htm

If anyone tries this before I do, drop a line.

just a guess... the windshield of the p38 is probably a much different angle than the disco. Thus it will prob look goofy and the brackets won't fit. Not to mention the electronics on the P38....

I'm going to take measurements on the angle, and the distance from the hole to the 'A' pillar. If the angle isn't right, that can be tweaked with a heat gun. I am not worried about the electronics, they are inside and Rovers seal pretty well. Not to mention I don't plan on fording windshield deep river crossings either, which is a bit nuts in itself.

Sure, it's easy to say you won't be fording any windshield deep water BEFORE the snorkel is in place. Try saying that when your buddy is on the other side of the river and the water is lapping at your front bumper!

I had water on my hood that way.

If it looks to be a real issue, all those electronics under the passenger seat can be moved higher up.

Is this in theory, or in practice? Sure, they could be moved, but I've never heard on anyone actually doing it. The amount of wires we are talking about are similar to the amount of wires used on the space shuttle.

I used to work in an engineering lab as an electronics tech, it wouldn't be hard for me.
I also wired a whole saturation diving system. Thousands of wires. A little P38 doesn't bother me :D

Actually, I'd guess that they're exactly the same. body structures under the pannels are exactly the same aren't they (same chassis, just different roofile on the Discos)? I would also think that the windshields and 'A' pillers are common parts. Anyway to confirm this (I don't have my RAVE CD with me....)

Kevin,

RR Classic and Disco I share alot of parts. Their chassis are nearly the same. P38 and Discovery are not. Completely different. Different wheelbase. Different chassis shape. Different structure underneath. Different windshield.

No completely different platform... other then maybe the engine... P38's and Disco's share very little: different driveline, suspension, ECU, tranny, etc....

I am going to sell my P38 and buy a Classic. Too much BS with the P38 trying to get aftermarket stuff for it etc.

If you are a gifted fabricator then the P38 can be an awesome vehicle but you have to build all your kit from scratch.

For bolt on ease a RRC is easier for sure, even so, I have built at least half of my kit for the RRC and I am not a gifted fabricator. I just bug the crap out of the local machine shops.

you just have to know where to look... there are more and more P38 aftermarket vendors popping up all the time... here's a good list of vendors for various P38 items!!!

Rover Accessories also has a ton of P38 stuff. I talked to them at the national rally and they sent me some info on what they do (rocksliders, winch bumper, rear bumper, upgraded air suspension) and they will fabricate anything you want.
