But Chris they have the little grip section on the end of the filter. I don't use them on the Rover but I do use them in my car. They are a bit too spendy for the Rover. For the Rover I use STP filters.

Is the NAPA cheaper?

It's like $6 for the Wix.
I pay $4 and change for the Wix 51515 at Fleetpride. No idea if there's one near you
http://www.fleetpride.com/fp_p/branch.html

I've also gotten them about the same price at a farm supply co-op, like Southern States.

edit: Sorry, it's Great American, not Fleetpride, where I've been getting them for that price. It's a local Georgia company.

I've had the screw driver through the can trick backfire on me, ended up tearing the can completly off the base plate.:banghead:

Had to use a pair of vicegrips and a metel cutting jig saw blade to saw around the holes in the plate until enough were cut through to bend the plate away from the mating surface to break the adhesion.:applause:

Napa 21515 is the same filter.

You dont want to use the 21515. Get the NAPA 1515 it is the premium and the exact same filter as the Wix 51515. Check out the 51452 or Napa 1452. It has a 415psi burst as compared to 290psi of the 1515. I use the Caterpiller 0364464. It is the 1515 equivilent. Frams I wouldnt use them.

Yikes the Wix 51452 is 10.49$ at Orielys. But if your engine is tight and has a high volume oil pump you may want the extra security it when it gets cold.

As a last resort I have one of those oil filter wrenches which digs into the can, but definitely provides traction as it does so.

Only had to use it once - with a stealership fitted oil filter!

Agree with other posters - oil the threads and the rubber seal, fit by hand and snug up.

Tend to use Bosch filters or OEM.

How about when the filter paper comes apart and clogs passages. Seen it!

Years ago, my mother owned a diesel garage. Her shop manager's brother drove in with a Chevy van that had never had the oil changed. They changed the oil...

A piece of sludge broke loose, clogged an oil passage, a rod bearing seized, the rod broke, hit the cam, busted the cam and broke the block up badly.

See what changing your oil will get you?

C'mawn Chris, like that couldn't have happened with any oil filter, including an OEM. bad parts make it past QC all the time, just ask Greg Smith!

I just called a local FleetPride (FleetPride's corp website line card says they carry Wix) but this one only carries Baldwin. $4.52 for the B2 which is the crossover from Wix 51515.
Looks like Bladwin is owned by the same company that bought Hastings filters. They also own Purolator.
The minimopar site seems to think Baldwin is ok, but doesn't say much about them.

RockAuto has the 51515 for $4.09, which might be worth the shipping if you buy a masterpack of 12. Keep in mind that the 51515 isn't what's listed for Land Rovers on their site, so if you have any issues, RockAuto will blow you off.

LOL, I think I might still have a piece of the cam from this one!

I go through a lot of the 21515 filters, probably three or four a week. Sadly, I have to buy a minimum of 10,000 to get them directly from my wife's employer that owns WIX. But, if I were to buy that many, I could have them labeled with my smiling face!

FWIW, I like Purolator.... and, Advance is open 24/7, and is closer than Wally-World and the Fram junk....

I use the NAPA 1099 for the Series.... (canister filters aren't as easy to find...)

The Napa that I can see from my house has them at ~11 each. The shipping on that one from Amazon kills that $1.69 savings. Never heard of Baldwin.... (I've got a Cooper on my workshop shelf, and a Napa Gold.) $50 upfront then another $50/year to be a member, to save $16/case, doesn't make sense. W/o being a member, they come out ~9/filter, nut since the shipping's not free, I just don't think that I'd come out ahead going that way, not by enough to justify the hassle.....

Unless I'm missing something?

I'm running the NAPA Gold 1068 filter. I think I paid $6 for it.

Eventually, I should consider getting one of the 2.5 spin-on oil mounts... they bolt right up the the 2.25, would be a less expensive filter then, and easier to deal with....
