Some Ah*le put something in my 2004 disco gas tank

The mechanic called me today and said the damage is about 5 grand. the gas is not clear looks milky. I have full coverage on the vehicle and a 250 deductable. Well tomarrow im putting cameras up front and back hopefully I can catch them next time. Sorry guys I had to vent any advice locking cap ext thanks. Full story below.

Some Ah*le put something in my gas tank. I noticed Thursday the 29th that my gas tank lid was not latched. after further investigation I noticed that the plastic latch was missing and some new scratches had appeared between the door and body. I called my wife and had her check the area where I park my car she said that there looked like gas on the ground "still hasnt evaporated" and the plastic latch was on the ground. Nothing other that the slight damage to the paint by the door was damaged i didnt notice any gas missing . Thursday my wife said her new VW Routan was running bad and the check engine light after we had just had the oil changed. well sunday came and my car is running crappy the check engine light came on so I called my insurance and told them about what happened and that we happen to be the only cars in the neighborhood with this problem. By the way we have charges on a neighbor for pulling a gun at a party, assult and breaking and entering and a restraining order. We go to court tomarrow for her assult charges. I called the police unfortunatly the prints that were left were unprintable. I filled two seperate reports but without proof no charges will be filed.

5 grand sounds like the mechanic is trying to make some loot off the insurance company. He probably trying to get them pay to replace the tank, pump, all the lines, etc.

I had a similar issue with a few kids when i lived in NC. They egged my truck once, but were never an issue later. Especially after they went to juvi for b&e.....

Sorry to hear this. It's this kind of crap that drives me to keep my vehicles away from such folk. And it's good to hear that the person who pulled the gun didn't end up dead, as I suspect you'd be dealing with more than just some vandalizing (if they're of poor enough character).

YOU should NOT have let the police take care of your neighbor and you should NOT trust a mechanic that knows you have that much insurance. They ALL are covering their own butts by just suggesting that it needs a new engine so that they have no responsibility for a crate motor they can say took a week to install. Sorry bout the truck but the neighbor did it and they will never pay. I'm with PT on this one. Drain it , clean it, fill it, and start her up. the bill is 5K anyway...

When I was driving buses for the city, they were worried about people stealing fuel. So they put locking gas caps on everything. Most of the time they had to be taken off with a drift pin and a hammer.

Does anyone make a metal version of that black plastic fuel door arm/latch (or whatever the proper name is)? While it would mean more damage to the body and fuel door if someone attempted to get into it, maybe it would mean preventing them from stealing/tainting the fuel in the tank.

Wouldnt it be easier to steal the fuel from the tank? Nobody sees you and you dont need a siphon.

I use an air drill and spade bit or hole saw. Gets it all at once!

Yup, I've heard of that happening. Thieves just ram a spike into the bottom of the tank and let Mr. Gravity do the work directly into a fuel can.
