SRS air bag light

Test book or Autologic ... usually the dealership or someone well equipped has to do this for you. ... or you could just pull the bulb.

What caused the fault?

The truck was in for servive at my friends shop and they were working on a few things:

Changed starter
Timing
disasembled lubbed the hood cable
changed battery cable and grounds
checked injection

strangely the check engine light went also???

Since they adjusted timing, I'm guessing it's a '94 or '95?

Did you get the fault code and see why the check engine light was illuminated?

yes its a 95. the check engine they can clear but the SRS is the one they don't know. Is the dealer the only one?

Well, the dealer is pretty much the only one ... and it's usually (from what I've heard) to the tune of around $80. The thing is, at least on the OBDII D1's, and I would assume on the OBDI's as well, that anytime the vehicle experiences a power failure, the SRS light illuminates. From the looks of the repairs your friend did, that's not real surprising that the battery would be disconnected. I am interested to figure out why the CEL. If you can ascertain that it's not related, I'd be tempted to just pull the bulb for the SRS, especially if you have a non-airbag bumper, as the general consensus here is that having one decreases the force of impact needed to set off the air bags. ... and on a side note, pulling the SRS bulbs does not set off another CEL, and is a 15 minute job.

The other scenario comes in the form of whether or not your friend wants to work on lots of Rovers. If so, he can purchase the Rovacom Lite software from RoversNorth, for only ~$1100. Allows you to tweak a good number of stuff that until recently required a trip to the dealer, or a fat wallet to pay for their software.

BTW: several folks told the SRS would work eventhough the light came on (mine came on from having the battery disocnnected and such) in any event i had some tech from SJ LR and a two different techs from independent LR shops tell me the same thing.

but like i said early... never had the need to find out if they really did work or not yet... knock on wood!

SRS Light

If my SRS light came on every time I had a power failure I'd spend my whole life getting it reset.
I am at a loss as to why your SRS light would go on with the repairs that your friend did.
I believe that you have a genuine SRS fault and since he probably did not remove the airbags themselves the fault would be in sensors located behind the headlights. Check to make sure the wiring harnesses are connected to the sensors correctly.
If it doesn't bother you I'd get it reset next time you need to for something else but I defintely wouldn't take the bulb out. It's not like it's an ABS or check engine bulb people generally like to know if their airbags are working.
My 2 cents.

SRS light = bags will not deploy
If the ecu detects a fault anywhere it shuts down the system and illuminates the light.
Connection at sensors, rotary cassette, harness issues are all possibilities. Who ever turns off the light should be able to read the fault codes in the SRS ECU and point you in the right direction.

Did they have the steering dissconnected for any reason?

Okay, I shouldn't have said "anytime the truck experiences a power failure" ... there is some quantity of time that has to elapse during the power failure, and I don't know what it is ... anyone? I do know that when I had to replace my battery, after draining it, that the SRS light came on.

unfortunately

Unfortunately you will still have to get the light reset. The good news is they usually have free coffee at the dealership. You will just have to drink about 80 cups to brak even.

Every time i need to have the light reset I usually wait until my next scheduled oil change, and let the dealership do it. They notify me that SRS ECU is OK and they reset it for nothing, but it's a $40- oil change. Just check for leaks after, workmanship is sketchy at some dealerships.

If battery voltage falls below a preset point for a preset period of time, the SRS computer will log a fault. The airbags will not fire as long as the light is illuminated. The rovacom-Lite is probably a short-lived item as Black-Box has introduced a newer, better, more expensive unit.

Most common fault for SRS light illumination other than battery voltage is wiring harness problems-commonly on the sensor beneath the battery. the wiring harness is very pricy, very pricy.
