Holly crap why is removing a start off a 97 disco so dam hard. :banghead: How do you get the heat shield off? The heat shield is riveted to the frame. I am cover in grease and just want to push the dam thing off a cliff. Does anyone have any idea's on how to make this job easier? Thanks as always.

The heat shield is connected to the motor mount with a small bolt, clean the area and you will find it, i think a 10mm wrench or socket is needed........
Hope this helps

Pony up for a 12"+ long extension and work one of the starter bolts from in front of the motor mount.

Remounting the starter was a bit of a pain, get a nice comfy spot.
I was on my back for better than a half hour trying to line it up and start the bolts.

You can do it.

Its a bitch, esp. if the whole area is oily (as so many are). My personal truck has bad starter heat soak in the summer, but I havent even touched it. Been putting it off two years.

there is no reason to drop the sheild to drop the starter.

disconnect the neg battery terminal

remove the 2 allen head cap screws that retain the starter

once the starter comes down then disconnect the the wires.

Getting the shield out of the way would help an amateur greatly when it comes to NOT rounding out the allen head bolts. BTW they are 8mm and make sure you get the tool as far in there as you can.

If they do get rounded out, the shield impairs your ability to remove them by other means.

Plus, ripping the shield out and stomping on it is a little cathartic.

from the front straight back to the top bolt, it takes about 8" of extensions as I recall.

its really not as tough as people make it out to be.

Well, if you finally do it and round off the Allens, you'll have to remove the exhaust manifold and use EZ-outs on the bolts.

Other than that, nothing particularly wrong with Allen bolts. I wouldn't replace them with a stud and a nut - it's even worse to have to get the larger hex socket on the top nut.
That said, on the 350 V8 Buick it takes all of 15 minutes and 9/16 wrench to replace the starter, on the parking lot. They've really done a number on the poor 215 with the starter.

Not on the top bolt, I rounded one out that seems frozen solid in place and then took a die grinder with a cut off wheel to it. Cut the head off it and got enough bite on what was left with some quality channel locks.

FWIT, as I was leaving for MAR my starter went out...so I call up the dealer and explain my need for urgency (Richmond) and I'm in at 9am and out by 11am!

Bad news $900 for a f'n starter!!!!

But they gave me a cool hat!

I've taken the top bolt with an EZ-out on someone else's truck, with exhaust manifold out of the way.
