Starter from hell

FWIT, as I was leaving for MAR my starter went out...so I call up the dealer and explain my need for urgency (Richmond) and I'm in at 9am and out by 11am!

Bad news $900 for a f'n starter!!!!

But they gave me a cool hat!

I paid more than that and didn't even get a hat!

If you use a stud on the top, weld a handful of coupling nuts together so the nut extends beyond the end of the starter. Now, if you need to remove your started on the trail, you can do it with a crescent wrench or a pair of channelocks!

The bolt is 3/8-16, the socket head cap screw hex driver size is 5/16", but 8 m/m works pretty well too.

Ok last night I went to war and I am much closer to understand how to get the starter off the block. I snaked in a 12' extension with an 8mm allen shocked from the front of the disco but could not get the extension with the allen socket to line up because the o2 sensor was in the way. However, it looks like I can just unscrew the 3 square bolts holding the heat shield and I will be golden. Are those 3 bolts holding the heat shield in place rivets or small nuts. If they are nuts what size? They look to be about 8mm. The nuts look easy to get to from the top of the Disco. Thanks

whats up here?...spend 5 min a night and then ask another question?

no offence but this is about a 20 min job to drop a starter.

this might be something you want to pay someone to do at this point.

Just order a new starter from britishstarters.com Very good idea and looks like a great value. I am going to keep the crap starter I won on e-bay for a back up. This jobs suck so bad I never want to have to do it again and the starter on britishstarters looks great. Thanks and I hope I get it soon. I am getting tired of riding my cross bike to work.

I have a 5 month old little girl and she and my wife gang up on me when i get home. I love to work on my rovers and you are correct I should just pay someone but honestly I like the distraction.

Dude you are smoking crack. I think you could do it in an hour if you had all the tools. It is one of those jobs once you do it once and understand it the next time it is cake. I find most jobs on Rovers are like that.

20 minutes is fast, but perfectly doable.
