I have searched and I found some info but does anyone have a step by step process how to remove the starter on a DII? Any help would be great. Want to do it myself this weekend.

Have you checked RAVE? I can't offer you any advice on a D2, but when I replaced my D1 starter it was a straightforward job and following the directions in RAVE was simple. There were one or two pieces of hardware that were difficult to access, but with the right tools and small hands it is not too bad.

x2 for checking the RAVE.

IIRC this should be pretty much the same process between the D1 and D2.

When you get to the point of trying to unbolt the allen head cap screws, make sure you clean the heads of the screws out really well and use allen head sockets (not allen keys) with extensions to get to the top screw.

If you can get the screws loose relatively easily, then this isn't that hard of a job.

Remove the heat shield by any means necessary.
Remove the socket cap screws.
Replace with hex cap screws for easier removal next time.

Step 1: Download RAVE
Step 2: go buy beer while waiting for download
Step 2: disconnect battery
Step 3: Drink a beer, because the next step is the hardest past of the job
Step 4: remove heatshield, consult RAVE
Step 5: Drink another beer
Step 6: remove starter bolts, good luck getting the hex driver in the bolt if the truck has seen any mud

During step 6 if you haven't drank the rest of the beer you bought, you might want to try hard liquor…

If it's a stock truck that hasn't seen much off road time, it's easy and you'll probably only go thru a couple of beers...

Totally don't need studs.
I swapped my starter and when I did I installed regular hex cap screws.
One day my truck would start, starter would just click. I swapped out my starter and another one at least 3 times in a matter of 15 minutes tops. And that includes troubleshooting time in between. Turned out the cable was loose on my battery. :banghead:
Anyways, without the heat shield in the way it takes maybe a couple minutes to pull the starter.
