Stove choices

Hey folks,
I'm planning on buying a good stove for camping but I know there a few types out there and I'm curious as the how certains models are for their intended uses. I want something that'll work almost anywhere [ no Everest expeditions planned ] but it stable and relatively compact that can cook for 3 people. What are the best fuels types or the cleanest type of stove to use and so on. I know the old school COLEMAN 2 burner types are getting cheap at WALMART for like $40 +/- but what else rocks? Thanks in advance

I got the single burner Campchef. I love it, but it is rather bulky. If you go that route, the carry bag is reall nice. But you know, that SS table top gas grill they have at Lowes for 100 bucks is not bad....

I still think you can't beat the liquid fuel traditional coleman.

Adaptors are available to convert to propane if you so choose, either using the little tanks like lanterns use, or the larger RV size tanks.
I have the above in 3 burner configuration.

Not sure about a big stove like that - but for small stoves you can't beat the MSR XGKII - I've taken this thing everywhere in all kinds of weather and never once had a problem.

Yep really like the optimus stuff. If I ever break my MSR I'd definitely consider one - especially since most of the MSR stuff is now made in China.

I'm a big fan of the liquid fuel stoves (alcohol / white fuel / gasoline / etc) over propane. They never freeze up or reduce output in cold weather (which is exactly when you want them to work really really well), and if you get one that runs on unleaded then you don't need to carry multiple fuels.

the Lowes grill

I'll second the $94 Propane Stainless Steel grill from Lowes. I've had the thing since Christmas and use it about 5 times a week. Its worked flawlessly since I got it. I recently bought the adapter hose that connects the grill to a larger propane tank. Oh, a definate trick/tip to using a shallow grill like that is to let it really preheat and then turn the temp as low as possible, this prevents your food from getting charred.

I grew up camping with my folks, and we used one like this, only 30 years old. Damn thing still works.

That's the one my dad has. He purchased it about 26 years ago. The power went out, and my parent's had no way to heat my bottle mike as a baby, so he got that stove. Still works and he still uses it a few times a year....

Dan,

I checked it out at Costco today. That thing is nice and built like a tank. I didn't purchase it though....the size and level of breakdown just didn't seem practical. I'll stick to the double colemans packed in a 1650 ;)

.....Depends entirely on the application or what type of recreation your into.

I have used my MSR-WhisperLite ($75) for 2 seasons now. I really enjoy the versatility and that it is so lightweight. I do alot of hiking, rafting trips and camping here in the NW. -So this is perfect for my purposes. However, I think I may also purchase a trusty Coleman two-burner. They last forever and much more practical when trying to cook for a group of folks.

I actually have alot of MSR stuff and have been quite happy with the performance thus far.

And I'll stick to my single burner Campchef stuffed in a bag with the propane tank rolling around in the back seat..........
