Strange transmission happenings...

Hey all, I've been searching, but not finding much on this, help me out...
Ok, the other day I had been driving a bit, nothing more than usual, and I would say it was hot out, but not terrible.
So I'm wating in the parking lot for a friend to show, and I had the truck idoling in the lot and I would occasionally drive around and see if I was really in the right spot (yah, I was lost)
Here's the symptom... After idoling for a few minutes, I would put the car back in D and the transmission would barely engage. The car would move forward a bit, with almost no power, and then die. Restarting the truck seemed to reset everything and it would act normally until after idoling and I would get the same result.
This happened 3 times last weekend and hasn't happened since.
How worried should I be about this? Any idea where to start diagnosing whatever this is? Transmissions are a bit foreign to me.

When the trans goes into limp home mode it selects 3rd gear and doesn't shift. So it is good enough to drive it but it loads the torque converter pretty badly. If the fault was the gear selector switch down on the side of the tranny like it was on mine it gets full of crap and you can get intermittent faults that clear when you restart after you have wiggled the shifter or put it in Park to restart. In the end it starts happening with higher frequency until you get stuck in park because the tranny computer doesn't know what gear you are in. That third gear start from no mphs feels like the tranny broke. If you put more power in it will move but it will feel like it is straining especially if you turn the wheels to the lock or uphilll or in soft earth.

What is a limp home mode on a non-electric 4HP22 on a D1? There's no tranny computer.

haha, nice.
Yes, it's due for a service. I need to get it cared for before it crapps out and I have to find out how to ship a replacement to Guam. ugh.
Thanks guys, I just didn't know if I'm experiencing something I should be really worried about or not. I think a good flush and service should do it.

From your original post I couldn't figure out if it's transmission or engine issue. Whatever happens to the transmission, off-idle torque converter is not locked up, so the engine should not stall.

Well, I'm still a bit perplexed too. I had some very similar symptoms last night. I haven't gotten around to the trans service yet, perhaps later this week. But I was wondering if there is something the transmission might do in order to stall the engine.
Given your comment, it looks like it may be more of an engine problem. I'll admit it's running a bit rough. Checked the plug wires (roughness seems to match the symptoms of a missing plug wire) all, good.
Last evening I pulled the K&N I just cleaned this past weekend before driving home, and I didn't have a problem and it seemed to run quite well.
I'm just going to put in a regular ole' air filter and see what happens.
This is all happening on the back end of a headgasket replacement in December, and a reluctantly replaced MAF, and then the before cat O2 sensors were acting up, so they were replaced too.
I'm just happy it's not overheating anymore! haha

Hey guys, I got this...
Transmission still needs servicing, but it wasn't the problem.
Stalling was caused by a dirty MAF. Cleaned and no longer running rough.
Thanks all for your insight
