Well the update so far.

No guns and no shooting (this is 1/4 from The Bel Air Gates, in Los Angeles)
Larger dogs, are probably not the answer in this instance (my friend has enough 'Pets" and it would not be fair on the dogs)
I walked my spaniel and the terriers round the hillside behind the property last night at dusk, and my spaniel was having a field day with all the 'signs". and he was very busy "marking" his territory (but he has all the deterrent effect of a pink fluffy bunny).
The adjacent property owners have agreed to hire a coyote trapping expert. From what i can determine there are 2 or 3 young coyotes who are particularly bold or very hungry, and have no fear of humans.

I can only imagine the buffet of animals you have come around up there. That moose you posted a picture of the other day was huge.

I bird hunt extensively in central and western VA. I know they are out there, but my dogs work pretty close (50 yards and closer). We have had encounters and caught glimpses, but no contacts or close calls. I think yotes are a neat species. I would rather not tangle with them, but I think my two dogs could probably hold their own until I got to them.

Funny, I was going to say that too. We use them down here to keep varmits away from horses and cows.

Any of the cross mules, donkeys, etc will do quite well. There are those images floating around the net of one killing a mountain lion. I've had a few Sicilian donkeys in the past at farms and even those buggers will chase off coyotes. I've seen plenty of angry cows run off coyotes that were stalking newborns as well.

Donkeys, well one particular donkey when growing up, would chase us when we took a short cut through "his" field , all I remember is very loud "bray" followed by thundering hooves and gnashing yellow teeth as we dived over the barbed wire fence.

Update,
Limited to humane traps and no crossbows (but that did appeal to me:) ) The "specialist" (who certainly looked the part) has set traps but has had no luck catching any so far.

Coyotes Kill Another Pet & More Coyotes Sighted in Bel~Air
From a resident on the 100 Block of North Bentley:
Sadly I am reporting that our dog was killed by coyotes last night. She has an outdoor, fenced dog house and dog run. The coyote(s) jumped the fence and took her out into the garden. We found hair and her collar under some trees. I had thought about making the fence taller, but never did -- we have kept her there when she wasn't in the house for 10 years. Perhaps our bad experience will encourage others to be alert to coyotes stalking small domestic animals.

From a resident on the 1000 Block of Chantilly:
We had 3 coyotes in our backyard. Our dogs were in the back and we heard one of our pugs barking like crazy. Our housekeeper looked and saw that there was a coyote staring at our pug and stood only 15 feet away. There were two other coyotes (approx 100 feet away) that were moving in closer. When we heard our housekeeper screaming, we ran down the stairs two see these HUGE coyotes in our backyard (approx 40lbs each). My husband ran into the back and grabbed a pipe to scare the closest coyote away. Eventually all 3 scampered off up the hill. We have never seen them in our backyard before and we are devastated that they may have now "marked" our house.

Packs of 2 or 3. That pug would have been breakfast for one or all three would have fought for it.

I thought this was an urban area? The hill they scampered up sounds like a pretty good backstop if you ask me. Also, a pipe? Are coyotes scared of pipes? Hubby might want to replace that pipe he grabbed with some .223.

Guess they'll have to pack up and move. They coyotes marked their house, it'll never be safe again.
