T-case shifter stuck in high

Hi,

I recently bought a 94 RRC, and the t-case is stuck in high range. I did a search but didn't find any info on the RRC, just on Disco's. Maybe I didn't use the correct search terms. I'm pretty sure the t-case is still the BW, does it have the solenoid like the LT230? If not, any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for the help,
-JP

It should not be an LT230, unless someone did a swap. The RRC has just a high/low transfer case.

Just to make sure, is the main gearbox in Neutral before you try to switch to Low?

I don't think the BW has a lockout solenoid. Spray the linkages with pblaster and rock the lever back and forth. you might need to move the truck back and forth, so put it on a flat level surface where you can go forward and back about 5 ft.

Yup, the gearbox is in neutral and I'm rolling less than 5mph when I try to shift. I've also tried while stopped in park. Neither seem to work...

Thanks, I'll give this a try tomorrow afternoon after I get a chance. Another problem developed tonight, so I'm off to search for more info on it as it's definitely more pressing!

Thanks for the heads up. Does the RRC solenoid pose a problem as often as the Disco's? I didn't have time to troubleshoot last weekend, so this got put off until next weekend. I'll check both the solenoid and the linkage.

sometimes I have to push like hell to get mine to budge (usually when i'm on the trail)... sometimes it goes with almost no effort at all (usually when i'm on the street)...

pushing the lever back and forth seems to help too.... and usually while moving (2mph)

And don't get crazy with forcing the shifter. I took in a Range Rover recently where the kid actually broke the mount for the shifter away from the transmission! The only thing holding the shifter was the linkage to the transfer case and the rubber boot!

Okay, yesterday was a nice day and I finally had some time to work on the Rover. This was the problem I decided to tackle. I figured I'd post up with the results in case someone actually decided to use the search feature at a later date.

I disassembled and removed the center console, drilled out the rivets that hold in the TC shifter boot, and removed the boot. There were two allen head bolts holding the solenoid housing to the linkage. I pulled those bolts, disconnected the electrical plug, and voila! The shifter finally moved. I worked it back and forth a few times to loosen up the linkage. I didn't pull the solenoid from its housing just to replace an empty housing. I can see why this makes sense on the LT230 with the solenoid actually mounting in the t-case, but with this one on the linkage, there didn't seem to be any benefit to reinstalling the housing.

I put everything back together. I used 3/16" x 1/2" pop rivets to reinstall the rubber boot around the shifter.

Thanks for the help everyone!

These fail on the disco as corrosion eats at the mating plug in the firewall. The solenoid is good it is just the power that isn't. You have to pull it apart and direct wire. I don't know if the RR is similar but it is another one of those Rover things that has an electronic problem component.
