So the cops have busted my balsl twice about this and I have tried numerous times to fix..

Its the tailight on the drivers side and its a brake light issue..

This brake like is dimmer then the one on the right. I have swapped bulbs and those plastic things that hold them in and same issues.

When headlights are on the tailights all work fine, until you hit the break. When you hit the brake the brake light on the drivers side does not work.

used a test light to compare both sides and power is all the same.

tried to replace the assembly, then the brake light worked but the blinker ran at light speed on the left and normal on the right..

any ideas? no electrical work done on it in a while so it was not messed up from tinkering.. the problem just came about on its own..

thanks so much for the help!!

guess its a ground problem but where??

In an effort to utilize the search "button" this is the most similar thread that I can find, but the I suspect that the solution to both problems might be the same.

My specific problem is that my driver's side brake light only works when my headlights are on. PS - I know squat about electrical systems.

bodhizattva - your issue sounds like a pretty much definite grounding issue.
justaddmtns- check your bulb-and its seat in its socket.Sounds like bulb not properly installed-seating, or not a good one.
Both you guys will find a small investment in a 12v test light vital to helping you with your issues and a fine addition to your tool box.

Thanks. I have checked the ground. Actually had a master tech check the ground. It worked in his driveway and after I pulled away it no longer worked. He thinks its the socket, which I will try changing, but I think thats odd because I swapped sockets with the other side and still had the same problem.. There are months and weeks in between this troubleshooting and I just paid a $105 ticket.. lovely..

I do have a test light. I have tested every wire back there and compared it with the other side to find exactly the same results. I even replaced the whole assembly once but decided to return the new assembly when it did not alleviate the problem - see above..

I am going to bring it back to the master tech.. I give up.. Its annoying b/c I already paid him to fix it once and it worked in his driveway... It just didn't work after I left his driveway and when the orchard police decided to pull me over..

bod-sorry to hear about the ticket-prick could have given you a bad equip warning-fix it and show the judge its been repaired and usually they will dismiss-worth a try. Sockets on rover lights suck and lots of people [me included] have had issues and they want stupid money for fact.ones-you can use [splice in]autozone ,ect ones and silicone em into the housings or mod em to fit -check the wires to see if you got power to that socket...
justaddmtns...post again after checking the bulb and its fitting..

I took it apart yesterday. Carefully removed the bulb which was not burned-out and replaced it. Hit the brake pedal with lights off, then on. It didn't work. Looked at bulb again, now it is burned out....I have to go get one at autozone to replace it.....happy xmas....

Sounds like normal for working on a Disco elec prob. check that the bulb and socket contacts are meeting squarely and correctly. a test light or mutimeter might also be a time saver here. might be grounding too-looks like there is some power back there or the bulb would not have fried.also make sure proper bulb is being used....post again after enjoying your BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!!!!!

I had a similar problem with the drivers side socket on my D1. Had to take a dremel and remove some of the plastic where the socket plugs in. A small amount of overhanging plastic was keeping the socket from seating properly, so it was not making good contact with the terminals. Has not had a problem ever since.
