Talk me out of buying an LR4

Just picked up my 2013 LR4 from the shop. Needed front brake job. $1250. Two-and-a-half years and 33k miles ago it was $980. Also diagnosed source of new front end clunk. Sway bar bushings are toast. Don’t know yet what this will cost but I do know that it will be expensive. Yay me and my LR4.

Coincidentally, I test drove a 2023 Toyota Turd Pro Tundra this morning. I wonder what front brakes cost on that thing?
Prob cost the same or more to get a front brake job done on a D1. And front sway bar links are like $30 and an hours job at most.

these are pretty basic services you can DIY.

I think I’m on my original rotors at 78k. I need to do brakes though since they’re warped as fuck, but the pads still have meat on them (30k on those).

gunny, why’d you get rid of the D5? You had the diesel, right?
Yeah I’m curious how that thing did for you. Some people’s driving habits did fine with it. The def fluid and the carbon buildup are really the only big problems we see with the V6. People who tow horse trailers love the thing.

I recently when through the very same decision process. LR3 is a dandy, but too old for me.
Incidentally, there was an engineering change and the chain guides and chains were modified for ‘13 models.
Back to the point;
2013 was 10 years ago. And with the increased number of plastic bits… plastic deteriorates… you know where I’m going.
Be prepared for a maintenance bill.

In addition, 2010’ are starting to show vacuum issues. Again, nothing that can’t be fixed with money.
In the end, I settled on the 2016. Yes, not the 5 l. but a newer technology engine. And what’s wrong with an 8 speed transmission??

The things I spent my time searching for:
Low milage.
2 speed transfer case
original suspension with Heavy Duty package
rear comfort package (independent rear heat/cool)
maintenance records
everything works now.

On acquisition , and foreseeing a long relationship
ALL fluids change: supercharger, transmission, power steering, brake, oil, coolant, diffs, transfer case.
Coolant bypass hoses, transmission cooler hoses, pcv valves, all filters.
Air suspension dessident box.
Tires and an alignment.

And now we are on to the add ons stage
Lifting rods, rear ladder, roof platform, kick ass bumper and winch, steel summer rims (18s) with aggressive AT (not LT spec) tires.
(but keeping the 19 alloy rims for the michelin x-ice studded and the pirelli scorpion AT.)
Additional off road lighting,

in summary, The purchase price may seem like a bargain. Be sure to add in “prep” costs.

Hate to break it to you but the SCV6 is just a 5.0 with a supercharger and two cylinders plugged

i know that. and wish they weren’t plugged.
have a 4.2 sc and a 5 sc in xkr s. like them both for different reasons.

But I’m amazed on how much better the mileage is in the LR4 vs the jags…. the manner in which I drive them might have something to do with it, lol.

The D5 was great, but it started to have issues we didnt want to deal with. Primarily I cant see owning a rover past 2013 without a warranty. Ours was about to expire in 20K, we bought an extended warranty, and then the windshield started to leak again. We figured it was a good time to get rid of it so we traded it in on a Sierra Denali. I loved it, it got really good gas mileage, didnt have a lot of issues, and fit the family well. The only issue I had, and its not a huge one, is how bad the gas mileage was when I pulled a trailer from here to WVa. Never had any issues with carbon build up, keeping DEF in it wasnt an issue.

That seems really dumb.....

Its cost effective. They needed to add start/stop to pass efficiency tests, plugged two cylinders allow the OEM to reuse all the ancillaries and accessories (alternator, belt routing, radiator, hoses, motor mount location etc) and most importantly CRASH TESTING. But I dont think these trucks get crashed tested in the US anyway.

Sorry to continue keeping this thread OT, but aside from the windshield leak what other issues started to pop up?

I'm gonna have to shoot from the hip on this one as I threw out all the documents on her. Most of the issues were from the electronics to include the oil level sensor going out once, and then telling me it was critically low an then overfilled.... I think we had a turbo replaced too.

I’m glad that worked out for you. I’m interested in what your average cruising speed is when you’re on the highway? Some people have lots of problems. But others say what you say about the def. How would you describe your driving style. My friends say I drive like old people fuck.

I'm pretty aggressive, but my wife drove it more than me. Highway is usually about 80, and I liked the torqyness of the engine so I had a pretty heavy foot with it.
