if you really want a old 6 body then get a M6...they can be had with low miles for dirt cheap and they are really fast....with a chip and a cam gear change they will make 340hp and top 170. plus the 4 valve inline 6 is one of the strongest most reliable motors ever built by BMW

Thom

That would work for me! I see far more M5's around than M6's though.....

Actually Curtis you hit the issue I'm having. I like the character of the vehicle, but the dealer service is lacking and disappointing.

It is a 2001 certified preowned audi from a dealer located in slc. We got it in the beginning of 2002 and issues we have had, have been all that more alloying from dealing with the dealer. Really my issues started this summer, '02 and '03 where problem free. So I really didn't experience their service, just maintenence, till this year. Maintence on this vehicle has done only at this dealer from the previous owner and by us since new. This year I have gone through 3 sets of $25 each spark plugs, in less than 4 months and 5000 miles. They insist it's "bad gas", I say its something else, but to no avail. It also feels like the center diff is acting up.

We started discussing new because my wife is going to do a fellowship in the NIH in bethesda MD in probably 3 years from now. We will up and move to the joys of city living in DC and the higher than slc cost of living. We could buy a new car now and pay it off before we move. So we would have a 3 year old car and a old disco both paid off by then. Her salary would really drop from what she makes here in SLC to the NIH (like $20k). But after 2 to 4 years her salary would really jump (like $100K). But in the mean time we need at least one vehicle to last for like 8 years. The Audi really isn't giving me the confidence its going to last that long with currentlly having these problems. I plan on quiting work and become a full time graduate student when we move. So having 2 cars at no payments would be great, and if the disco dies, I'll put on our yard in front of our Georgetown home and let the grass grow around it till I can afford to fix it. :)

I know, I know go to a different dealer, that's happening monday. Right now I can't even trade it till it's fixed, or at least with out losing lots of money.

Oh wow - NIH? Georgetown? Hmmm...you know I work for UDOH now? I interact with NIH some and CDC alot. They are very...ummmm...I will give you the Cliff notes later:)

Anyways - now that you said that, you ought to get the Acura like Paul mentioned. Great little cars, at least some personality, and won't put you in the poor house maintaining them.

She did a summer fellowhip at the NIH and that started it all.

Her sister has a TSX, funny its been broken down this summer more times than my disco has in the 3.5 years I have owned it. Her TSX is only about a year old. The funny thing she still thinks its the best car ever and thinks nothing else could be as good because consumer reports told her so. My mother in law has one of those '04 RL's with the sport package and the 6 speed. Nice car, but you need bicepts of steel to fight the torque steer. Mid corner and you want to power out of the apex, forget about it, you'll be in the ditch fast. But the RL is still a good looking car, nice and roomy.

Curtis- She wants to goto the NIH and then back here to Huntsman to become a primary investigator on a R-1 study that she wants to put together. Unfortunity it means living on the 'wrong' coast again for while. :p For a few years moab won't be 3 hours away. :( But afterwards I'll be able to afford a rr3 as a daily driver and a CDK defender for fun. I just hope LR doesn't put IFS/IRS in the defender before I can buy one. I can sell you some really cheap 95 d1 parts in about 8 years though ....

here's the thing about a commuter car: some people think it's got to be economical, re: PLAIN and BORING> No way man, I'm thinking SL convertible, Audi, BMW, Jag. Get something classy, comfortable, fast, smooth and ...well....more economical to run than the Disco!

:D yep...no doubt

I have had alot of different euro cars. I buy them dirt cheap used from good homes and drive the living shit outa them. Nothing beats buying a top end car for 10% of what it sold for brand new.

If you know what you want and are willing to wait and watch e-bay and autotrader...ect ect You can drive some really fun cars for way way less then a new hundai or ford focless.

stuff like this highway rocket can be bought for 5k and give you all the comfort of the 90K car it is for almost nothing as long as you can keep up with the upkeep.

people can call a BMW a POS but, own one for any length of time and they get into your soul as much as a rover can to a 4 wheeler.

with euro cars in general the difference is the people. people that like to "drive" there cars buy euro cars and now some of the high performance asian imports. People that like to "ride" in there cars buy Cadilacs , chevy's, buick's and all the other soft riding slush mobiles

Musky is dead nuts on about this. Now if I could just find an M1 on E-Bay or Autotrader for 5K. I would quit my job to devote my full attention to beating it like a rental car all day long. :D

Just an observation as to why "...are pretty much always towards the top of many reliability ratings"

My vote goes for VW as well for a disposable daily driver. A year ago I went to purchase a new daily driver planning on picking up a Mini Cooper S JCW edition but the dealer wanted an extra $10k over sticker for the privilege.

Ended up with a new metallic black 2003 20th Anniv edition GTI. It's a great little car and saves the wear and tear on my other vehicles (Audi S4 and VW Eurovan) and gets an average of 30 MPG on my commute. Looks like an R32 but has the nice little turbo 1.8 with 5 valves/cyl and 180 hp. Also the 20th anniv has a 6 speed trans and 18 inch OZ wheels with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilots and Recaros. Fun and economical. I bought it exactly a year ago and have 22K miles on it.

My previous daily driver was a 1988 VW Jetta GLi that I put over 400k miles on. Bought it new and it still ran great but interior was falling apart.

Except for the Element, any cadailac, and Aztek.

You have to play with the Element first hand to feel the love. I felt the things were nasty looking too, until I went to the dealer to buy a Pilot and got sidetracked.

Boat loads of room, good mileage, quick on the highway, and I can load it up with wet dogs and scuba equipment!

I know the thing looks like a Coleman cooler, but you know...sometimes a cooler is absolutely bad-ass too!
