is there ever a 4.0/4.6 D2 (I can't speak for the 3.9 or P38's. I have only ever done D2's) with no HG issues? People with Higher mileage, do you have solid records from before you owned it? I am not doubting there is some that haven't had issues.

03 Disco S, just went over 90K and no HG issue yet. However when it does happen I'll be doing it myself. Can't afford to have someone do it!!

my 94 disco went 160000 on the first head gaskets and the ones in my RRC have over 100000 and they are still going strong as well.

You guys have me paranoid!

That morning cold start condensation is scaring the shit out of me now! (there seems to be more of it lately, i feel like a nervous hypochondriac)

Lemme see.

'88 RRC, 3.5, 100K+ AFAIK, original head gaskets.
'93 LWB, '95 Disco engine, about 150K, AFAIK, original head gaskets
'93 SWB, '93 3.9, AFAIK, original gaskets, 155K
'95 DI, 228K, did head gaskets at about 110K, pilot error led to overheating, been fine ever since.

'98 P38, 144K needed them when I sold it.

God dammit AFI, stop logging in on my computer!

95 D1 161,000 miles org head gaskets. First owner used as mall crawler till 130,000 miles, since then I've used it for 25% around town, 50% long distance interstate trips (hauling my camp gear, chain saw, tractor batteries, tools, etc) and 25% logging roads.

Head gaskets went at 80K, add that to a leaking steering box and needing brakes = trade in for a Lexus GX470 for a daily driver - drive the 65 Series IIA on weekends. :)

123K original hg

Late bloomer I suppose as I just bypassed the throttle body heater block in October, thermostat in January and suspect a heater core leak now. Passengers floorboard dampness issues and adding coolant every other week or so. Oil still looks perfect.

Sounding like I'll be doing the hg soon enough.

symptoms?

Neil,

You may have two different problems. Make sure your AC drains (nipples) are not clogged. Easy to check, get under truck reach up around the front of the tranny tunnel and feel for the rubber nipples and massage to get any dirt/mud out and see if they let go of some built up water.

Cheers,

Mike
