Currently have a 95 disco that I have worked on, so am familiar with the beasts. Just wondeing if there is a year I should stay away from..I am looking only at the 4.6. Any issues that pop up that I should know about?

I don't care for the Air Suspension in the RR. Plan on converting over to coils if you buy one with EAS.
Had numerous problems with the door lock. A sticking driver door lock put my engine into the "immobilized" state. I had to have it towed to the shop to have the computer reset, and the lock box replaced. Some security system.
The headliner came down after 3 years.

Other than that, I love the 1999 4.0SE I have.

I had a '96 Discovery SD- now running an '00 Range Rover 4.6 HSE. Advice as follows...

I agree- 4.6.
Get either an '00 or an '01.
Buy from a LR dealer and get an extended warranty.
Unhook the seat belt sensor from the drivers seat (but always wear your seatbelt)
Disconnect the 'Bonnet Open' sensor from the right side of the P/S headlamp.
Run a carfax check before you buy.
Test the heck out of everything- I mean everything.
Air suspension has a bad name- mine works fine.
Have the rig lifted so you can look underneath. If the dealer says you're not allowed under there, walk away.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Any specific questions- email me. p_kennington@hotmail.com

Good luck!

Paul.

Thanks much all. I was thinking of getting going the e-bay route. The savings seem signifigant...but it sound like thats not the best idea. Plus, it was kinda freaking me out to begin with.

Plan on the EAS failing, for sure. Also, the climate control system is problematic; blower motors, blend motors, etc...make sure it's all working properly. Turn the AC on high fan speed at the lowest temp and run it hard for like 20 mins to make sure it doesn't throw a fault. Do the same for the heater. I've also heard the 4.6 is more prone to failure for the fact that the bore is larger which reduces cylinder wall stiffness. Get a compression and leakdown check done, have the plugs read and make sure the transfer case is operating properly, no loud clunks etc - it's chain driven and the chain can stretch over time. Hope this helps...

Bear Valley Land Rover

Hi, I have only ever bought 2 rrc from private sellers, but if you want a newer LR, it seems the Bear Valley Land Rover in Atlanta is the place to go.

They are the #1 volume seller in the US of used rovers. They have far more used rovers than any dealership, which seem to concentrate more on the new models. they also sell them with warranties just like the dealer...and to make the deal sweeter they offer free delivery anywhere in the US! Currently they have 16 4.0/4.6's on their website, most from 2001 and up.

like i said, I have never bought anything from them, but they are apparently a very reputable source for off-lease rovers. It's worth checking out...

Be sure to check out Bear Valley

I just purchased my second RR. The first one a 99 was purchased at a local GM dealer in Bangor, Maine. Always wanted one and with little market up here in Maine, I got a great deal on it. That was three years ago. Loved it so much and really can't see the new body style both in the wallet or looks department. Anyway was looking for a nice low mileage 02 that I could keep for a long time. Did the ebay and AutoTrader.com things for a while, even checked out a couple at the local LR dealer (150 miles away). By chance I happened on the Bear Valley Land Rover site last month. What a great find. After doing a little research and a number or calls to Ken, I purchased a red 02 with 25k on it and 1.5 year left on the bumper to bumper. They paid the shipping to Bangor and the best part was offered me a good price on my 99. BTW, if in the market my old black 99 is currently on the site. It has 69k on it but I had a LR extended warranty and used it to keep in top shape. Who ever buys it will get a great beast.

I have purchased a number of cars in the past 50 or so years. Currently own the 02 RR, 01 Audi TT 225qr (purchased off AutoTrader) 95 Saab 900 se conv (purchased new from dealer, 90 Jag XJS conv (purchased off ebay) and a 99 Rialta also purchased off ebay. I can say that without a doubt BVLR is the best way to get a great deal on a super selection of LRs

Sorry for the long post, but I truely believe in these guys. The condition of my 02 and the way my transaction took place could not have been a more enjoyable experience.
