Thanks for the pic- any chance I can get the full res version and the other pics too? Steve from LRM wants em too... maybe he'll put 'em in the magazine.

That rut was about 30 deep judging the depth by my inseam as I waded through there. After we flipped it back on it's wheels, then winched out of the hole- it started up and winched out ok- but the battery died under load. Time to get a decent battery- it's died on me twice since as well.

Anyway- I'll post pics of the inside when I get them uploaded to my site. The interior damage isn't too bad, I started cleaning it today. So far the damages are:

Dent in rear quarter- will leave it there.
Front and rear interior door panels- cleaning up ok so far, may replace with used parts.
Sony S85 camera destroyed.
Smith and Wesson S10 flashlight and charger destroyed.
$250 worth of medical supplies destroyed.
All my spare straws for McDonalds for when they forget to give me one- destroyed.
Left rear speakers are toast... sucked anyway though.
One lost titanium and diamond ring that I think came off while searching the water for stuff.

It smoked a bit on the restart- ran the rest of the trail without ETC since I didn't want to restart to clear the error. After I changed the oil and filter as a precaution, I drove it the rest of the event without a problem at all. Towed my camper home just fine.
I know many people will never give a Freelander props, but I think it's a tough little mofo. That same hole claimed 2 or 3 more 'bigger' Rovers with rollovers too- FWIW, I ran that trail again after the 'incident' without issues just to be sure. The go-round on that hole was made bigger after this whole thing.

Thanks again to you guys that helped me out- I really appreciate how cool everyone was.

"that horse is long dead..." only because you shot it!

LOL the dent was small. I was expecting to see something destroyed.

Get an Engel or ARB Fridge and forget about ice forever!

:D

QUOTE]

Yea, lets cram 4 days worth of food for 2 people into an Engle fridge.

Can anyone get tose HUGE Army coolers? I would not mind having one of those for the longer trips I run, just for ice. I bet you can get 12-18 big bags in one of those.

4 days is nothing, 2 can easily live off an ARB (I have medium one) for 4 days, it really isn't an issue. My wife and I have lived for 2 weeks on it, without having to refill it. Usually on the longer trips it is packed with homemade smoked poultry, beef and fish that will last for weeks, plus other stuff that needs to be kept cold. I usually only keep a 6 pack of soda/h2o/beer in there at a time so it doesn't take up the space. Ice and ice chest are much more of a pain.

Oh yeah, WRT the freezer ideas. Just have someone with a big rig bring an old fridge or freeze full of ice. We used to do this on long camping/hunting trips.

I hate to say this folks, but after quite a few years on this board and watching all of the post-event MAR journals I am very grateful that I live too far out West to even consider making the trip. I am sure the social comraderie is fantastic, but I just can't see myself enjoying such an event just to drive a truck around.

I know I am spoiled by the great outdoors in the West and I am thankful for this blessing every day. Once again, as it is every year: Thank you MAR attendees make me realize how good I really have it ;)

We're glad you're too far away too Curtis!

Kyle,
My mistake....he's got bigger tires than that...I just don't know my numbers very well. According to my husband they are 34s.

Rollovers were mostly mild, except for the gold DI in the pics. He was going WAY too fast and was pretty liquored up from what I hear. Luckily, he just damaged his own truck and scared the crap out of the guys riding with him. We got there as they were turning it over. He was pretty somber (and sober) the next morning though...thinking of driving it back to NC and explaining it to his wife!

Randy,
I second that.

Curtis, I've never met you and I assume you are a pretty nice guy....but I wonder why you (and others) feel the need to post negative comments about an event you've never attended? Do you hear anyone say they had a BAD time at MAR? Not very often.

How about you come out next year, give it a try and then see?

Cheers-
Susannah

Kyle,
That was a singular incident, caused by very bad judgement...and I bet that guy would still say he had fun!

I see your point... but it's still a fun trip and I think people should always try it before they bash it!

well, for us MAR didn't turn out really good ... probably our "luck" :D

The first time we went to the trail we drowned ... thanks to all the guys, Rangie started after few hours, drove back, changed oil, did some other maintanance (just in case) , it was still misfiring, but after driving it a little bit on normal roads everything started to work perfectly ... went to the trail again ... broke a front axle (or CV joint, not sure yet).

On Saturday we try to start a car ... nothing ... not a thing happening. Spark, fuel, timing is ok... but nothing is happening :( ... After full day of working on truck and trying to figure out the problem and the consesus of two Mikes (I believe) the problem was narrowed to amplifier on distrubiter.

Sunday morning called in tow truck(took 3 hrs), towed it to Richmod (2 more hours) to U-Haul station, rented truck with dowly(3 more hrs, even though that truck was already reserved) there and drove it home... got home at 3am.

Here is the Rangie in "action":

damn, that sucks Anton. i was the guy with the Disco who you changed out the coil with and a few other parts. was really hoping we could get it started, but just no luck.

this was my first MAR, and i did have a good time. but the amount of people and the conditions just did not seem to mesh too well. spent about 2 hours just sitting around on the river trail. then had to turn around and go back as people finally told us it was a full on cluster ahead. but that afternoon had fun running some of the "easier trails" around. i had just as much fun looking at all the trucks as running the trails.

We had a blast at MAR.....the trails were tough, I didn't get to wheel nearly as much as I wanted too because of crowds on the few available trails and I still had a blast.

One thing I don't get though, and having spoken with a number of friends about it found they experienced the same thing.....I'm driving the main road and I must've passed 25 trucks each time, I smiled and waived to other drivers and 98% of them gave me a stone face in return. WTF is wrong with people that they can't smile and be pleasant and relaxed at such a fun event? 99.9% of the new people I met and spoke to were wonderful! Put them in a truck and they can't be nice anymore?? What's up with that?

Well its not just the event we are talking about here. AND , when the MAR goers chastise the non MAR goers (Not pointed at you Sus as I dont think you have) for making comment its supposed to somehow validate and disinclude those that make comment on the goings on. Well as I said , we arent just talking about this one event. We are talking about the sport in general and who ends up in our woods and back country and how they act when they are there. Sure there have always been some Yee Haa's running through some woods somewhere drunk off their ass in a truck thats missing more parts then it has left having a hell of a time throwing caution to the wind and really not giving a shit about what happens next (Me as a Teen) and there probably always will be. The difference is that he doesnt have any cheerleaders and a formal "Event" to help validate what he is doing and he isnt driving a status vehicle.
Some of you may recall the two unfortunate bastards that ended up off the trail in CO some years back and caused this huge uproar with everyone "Piling on" saying how bad it makes the sport look and how wrong they were and on and on and on. That was just two guys that did one thing wrong and it was almost a national disaster from reading some of the posts on it on various boards. Just two guys that did one dumb thing.......... How many dumb ass things can you count at each years MAR ? How many people do you think that information reaches ? How many new people were at each event that have no other knowledge of the sport that now think that is the norm ? How many of these people do you think will carry that new found knowledge into our woods and back country ? Perhaps right in Curtis's back yard . Perhaps in YOUR back yard... I know I have first hand experience with this very thing happening at least once...
So when people bail into these threads and comment , think about the big picture. Yes , I know most of you will never Visit Curtis's back yard and you dont really care (Out of sight out of mind) but alot here do and it matters to them a hell of alot how this sport is viewed and how people conduct themselves , especially when making first impressions on new guys/girls. This is a phenominon that is much more common in the East as we really dont have any trails to start with , trail closures happen but there are so few anyway that are so lame its not really of any impact.
I think you can see my point , I am not in any way defending Curtis as Curtis and I have had our bouts as well. I am just using Curtis in this as he happens to live where there are loads of trails that are always in danger of being closed by the actions of morons.

Cool that you brought up the Colorado story, Kyle.
I still believe that it is an excellent example of decent behavior after an honest mistake.
Wonder if there's a webpage somewhere with the complete log of the events.
I remember being pissed about all the crap that lr-discovery group was crankin' out about them.

I definitely agree Kyle. My only point is that atleast the majority of the people I met did not encourage this type of behavior and were definitely not partaking. I met some cool folks who were drinking..but riding and not driving. I'm sure there will be newbies every year who get the wrong idea, but it seems the veterans are able to pass the word that we need to be responsible as well as respectful in order to allow these events to be held again in the future.
