Throttle Body Heater Plate Question

Just finished reading another leaking throttle body heater plate and had a question. What is the reason for a separate plate? Is there a part under there that could require servicing? I know that a couple people have had the actual part breakdown and fall apart from the inside, and am assuming that the updated part would not do this. Is this a part that could be attached using a little JB Weld for a more permanent type solution? Didn't see anything in the Rave, so thought I'd check with people who may have had more experience with it.

thanks,

mike

it's the gasket between the heater and the throttle body that breaks down... the newer design is beefier ..

I bought the new part as well, but decided to just bypass it with a piece of hose and a couple of clamps. I'll eventually get around to putting the right part on. Once I get 2009's honey-do list beat down a bit.

I used about a foot of 5/16" heavy hose and made a U between the factory tubes and 2 small stainless hose clamps. The leak stopped. :applause:

I had a new gasket put on recently. They resurfaced the plate when putting the new gasket on. Might want to check into that and consider it.

dude, I want to read your posts, but my eye keeps wandering left to your avatar.. damn..

Don't bypass it... http://discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46013

The replacement part is cheap enough and takes all of 5 mins to swap in..

Just bypass it unless you're moving to a colder climate. Got rid of mine a couple years ago. You're local what's your rig look like? Any distinguishing features?

I've got the standard green - probably the only distinguishing thing on it right now is a set of Hella 550s on the front stock brush bar - still waiting for that ARB and Hannibal rack to come up for sale locally (yeah, right). What about yours? You're not the guy who works off US1 with the lift, rack, lights, and bumper are you?

I recently replaced the gasket, but one of the replacement bolts broke as I was tightening it and I went the bypass route until I can get the piece off and see if there is enough bolt left for me to remove it. I was just curious about the assembly in general because if there is nothing servicable inside of it, then are there any benefits to somehow just doing away with the gasket and sealing it permenantly?

it's probably just easier for them to manufacture that part in two pieces, would be my guess.. if you can find a way to permanently seal it, you should be ok with that I'd say..

This guy lives in FLORIDA.

When was the last time it was below zero in FLORIDA?

The Great Blizzard of 1899:)

Since I do occasionally head north, I am looking to see if there is a better solution in preventing it from leaking again - yea, it's a pretty cheap and quick part to replace, but with my luck, it would probably fully fail in the middle of the West Virginia Turnpike at 2:30 in the morning during a blizzard.

Appreciate the heads up Muller.

Living on the Texas Coast I can get away with it, but won't advise anyone living North of I-10 to do it.

I will get around to putting the right part on this spring when I do the flush and fill.

Neil.
