Traditionally the timing chain will make noise on start up and chatters for about 5 seconds or more and then goes away. When my oil gets old and/or its very cold out sub 20F, it'll make a slight chatter for a second to two on startup. From my research, that sounds normal. Anything longer though could mean it needs a new guide.
That is definitely not true for the 5.0 in the LR4. The most consistent way to verify timing chain noise on that engine, in my experience, is to get the engine warm, shut it off for about a minute, then restart. The noise is always apparent at idle and when it starts, it does not stop.
You probably have a V V T hub making noise. The tensioner used to fail on the real early 4.4's but I mean early like before they ran them in the LR3.Yeah, I was referring to my 4.4 in the LR3. Thanks for clarification.
