Tire selection help

OK, so I need some help with tire selection for my 04 Disco G4 edition. I am not quite ready to lift it yet and need new tires before hunting season/winter. I currently have the stock Michelins that came on it. The size is 255/65r16. I want to get a true All terrain tire as I have found this to be the biggest limitation of my truck, for the off trail driving I do. Does anyone have any suggestions of a tire. There are so many and it seems this is a tough size to get a decent tread pattern. Can I get a different size without lifting my truck yet? thanks, Bryan

I ran 235/85/16 for a long time before lifting it. and still run them with a 3"ish lift and it looks fine to me. I am on Michelin LTX a/t2's and love them. they get me anywhere I need to go (i had interco trxus m/t before and do the same trails and drive the same and have not noticed much of a difference)
they grip hella good in mud for some reason. reviews i read compare them to BFGmt km1's in mud.

thanks, any problems with the 235s rubbing?
I also 235/85 with no rubbing at all. Fills up the wheel wells really nice. You'll find that almost every tire comes in a 235/85, a common size.

Both 235/85 and 245/75 are extremely common sizes, with a huge variety of tread patterns from virtually every maker. The 245 is about an inch shorter than the 235, but still looks good on a stock truck. If you get the 235 you'll be set stock or lifted - you'll never need more tire than that for 99% of off road use.

Every brand has fans. Probably, across the board, BFG AT's or MT's get the most universal applause as just being uber dependable, long lasting tires. But they're not cheap. I've run Kumho's in various tread patterns for nearly 10 years now and have gotten good service out of them, and they're cheap. Typically 30K + to a set of mud terrain style 245/75's.

I've got a 2" OME lift on my DII. I am in desperate need to replace the crappy Wrangler HP's on here. Now that it's lifted, I really want to bigger (taller) tire to fill out the wheel wells, as well as I want something that can grab and claw better off-road.

I was just wondering why a 235?? Stock is a 255. Is there any downside to running a much narrower tire, or am I not going to notice a difference?

I like the idea of the 235/85. If our truck is already lifter 2"+, would you reccomend something different, or the same thing?

I'm looking at the obvious BFG A/T's and also Nitto Grapplers. Also Yokohama Geolander. Any reccomendations?

Actually, on TireRack's web site, I'm only seeing the BFG T/A KO in that 235/85 size. Is that the one y'all were talking about??

I also see the Michelin LTX AT2. Looks like a nice tire but, not as aggressive looking in the tread block design. Anyone else have good things to report on thier Off-Road prowess?

Go BFG....Expensive, but durable. I'm running BFG muddies, 265/75/16's on my D1 with a 2" lift. Great in all off road terrain conditions

Does a narrower tyre decrease the propensity of the car to "tramline" or wander on the highway. I've always been told a narrower tire will track straighter, but not sure if that's true.

Just wondering.

Okay, no one has reccomended these, but no one has said anything back about them either. Would these be a decent choise???

Toyo Open Country A/T
http://toyotires.com/tire/pattern/open-country-at

I would normally get something that everyone loves, but I have a significant financial incentive to buying a Toyo tire (I can get them for almost nothing), so figure I might give them a shot.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

UNFORTUNATELY, they don't make a 235/85 and I'd almost convinced myself I really wanted "pizza cutters" after reading the threads.

I run 7.50-16's on my D1, now THOSE are 'pizza cutters'!

Personally I think the thing is pretty scary to drive over 60 km/h with them. Mind you they are tubed and bias, radials would probably hold up alot better. 235's are around 4 cm wider though so that probably makes a decent amount of difference too.

I'm switching over to 235/85's in the spring.

I have 245/75/16 BFG ATs on one of my Discos. Fit great with no lift. I'm considering selling them. Let me know if you're interested. I've had them for a little over a year and there is a lot of tread left on them. I was actually at the dealer this weekend and someone asked me if they were new.

I have 235/85 BFG MT and they are louder going down the road than my 7.50 XZLs that I have. Both sets of tires I have gotten up to 80 mph on and didn't feel stability issues. Next set of tires will probably be 255/85 Cooper ST though.

thank you to everyone for your advice. Anyone have experience with the new BFG Muds? I've heard a lot of good things about them on trucks but haven't seen any on discos. They are available in a 235/85/16.

Ummm, I'm not sure. I think I paid close to $1K for all 5. Make me a decent offer. You're pretty close so I'm sure we can work something out. I'll be getting the truck back today so I can snap some pics tonite if you want.
