I tried the 235/85 BFG MT's and found them to be very loud, with wear that was both fast and uneven.

I'm back with the 265/75 AT's and all is well ...

I have 235/85 BFG MT and they are louder going down the road than my 7.50 XZLs that I have. Both sets of tires I have gotten up to 80 mph on and didn't feel stability issues. Next set of tires will probably be 255/85 Cooper ST though.

thank you to everyone for your advice. Anyone have experience with the new BFG Muds? I've heard a lot of good things about them on trucks but haven't seen any on discos. They are available in a 235/85/16.

As a few of the previous guys have said, BFG muddies are noisy on the tar. I run 265/75/16's on my D1 with a 2" lift. My truck is not my daily ride. I only take her out when we go away on holiday into the bush or go and play on one of the local trails......so the noise issue doesn't bother me much at all.
Highway speed (120km/hr) the tyres are extremely stable, fair grip in an emergency braking situation...... not that much else will stop my truck quickly when I'm fully loaded for an overlanding trip (3,5 tons plus)...... maybe a brickwall
I have got about 50k kilometers so far from these tyres and I have about 50% tread left, so I have got extremely good milage out of this set.
When it comes to off road conditions...... there are few tyres that compare.
Brilliant in sand...... all the Safari Tour Operators in Namibia use them in the desert sand dunes.......... and I mean dunes.... some of the biggest in the world
Mud: Excellent..... drove through Botswana in the wet season a few years ago. Didn't get stuck once, but pulled a few Land Cruisers and Jeeps outa the sticky stuff :D
Snow: Well we don't get much of that here in South Africa, but we occasionally get up into the snow on a mountain trail near me and these BFG's are pretty good on the ice and deep snow.
They aren't cheap or quiet on the road, but brilliant tyres. It all depends on what sort of driving you intend to do.
Goodluck, it's not an easy choice, but I'd steer clear of those Toyo Tyres ;)

OK, so I need some help with tire selection for my 04 Disco G4 edition. I am not quite ready to lift it yet and need new tires before hunting season/winter. I currently have the stock Michelins that came on it. The size is 255/65r16. I want to get a true All terrain tire as I have found this to be the biggest limitation of my truck, for the off trail driving I do. Does anyone have any suggestions of a tire. There are so many and it seems this is a tough size to get a decent tread pattern. Can I get a different size without lifting my truck yet? thanks, Bryan
I just purchased Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs a couple months ago for my D2. They are 245/75s and have put about 4000 miles on them. They have a pretty aggressive tread for an all terrain and were quieter than my old Open Country AT's. I just got back from Reno and used them on the trails in NW Reno off Virginia St. They were excellent on all those trails. Up here in Bend we have more sandy trails and do pretty decently (8outof10 Id say). The tire company I purchased them from say they are superb in the winter which is why I bought them, I'll find out this winter. For a set of 4 they were $740 for the 6ply and he gave me $80 for my old tires that Les Schwab wouldn't give me anything for. I am extremely satisfied with my choice.
Here is a link to the tire if you want to check it out. They are also shown in my profile pic.

Hey All,

I have a 03 DII with 3 inch lift( 2 inch OME and 1 inch spacers) and currently run 275 70 18 Toyo All Terrains. I am switching to 16 steel rims and tires. I am curious if people know clearence issues of running a 285 75 16 toyo mud tires. Guys including local shop suggest running 265 75 16 since mud tires are wider with side lugs and still look good. They also said if loks wrong take out 1inch spacer. Lower center of gravity with minimal clearence loss. Going from 18 Hurricanes aka Stock rims going to 16 steel wheels will add 1.5inch outsetting too.

Any words of wisdom welcome. I understand running the 32inch and taking out spacer makes most sense, but I like the bigger 33's and 3 inch lift look. I don't wheel hard core. I do trails with few rocks. basically anything somewhat friendly. Lockers nice for trail but those without can still pass it with skill and or speed.

Basically will 33's work ? and if so any trimming needed? RTE front bumper sliders and stock rear bumper for now.

Cheers

I also was curious as to the debate on which brand and style. Love my BFG km2's on my RRC and like Toyos MT but just more expensive. But love the side bites on Toyo MT's ...... how is wear between the two. My RRC is only offroad rig...... so maybe 2K in last 6months on them.

I've got a 2" OME lift on my DII. I am in desperate need to replace the crappy Wrangler HP's on here. Now that it's lifted, I really want to bigger (taller) tire to fill out the wheel wells, as well as I want something that can grab and claw better off-road.

I was just wondering why a 235?? Stock is a 255. Is there any downside to running a much narrower tire, or am I not going to notice a difference?

I like the idea of the 235/85. If our truck is already lifter 2"+, would you reccomend something different, or the same thing?

I'm looking at the obvious BFG A/T's and also Nitto Grapplers. Also Yokohama Geolander. Any reccomendations?

I used to have BFG ATs on mine, switched to Mickey Thompson Baja MT, great tires, never had an issue. Not noisy on the road at all, actually no sound difference from the BFG ATs, and stand up pretty well to paved road driving. I have driven with them around 75-80 and have not had any problems. It is definitely a tire i would buy again.
