Too low of miles?

I am looking at getting an 04 Disco and this is in my area.

This truck looks super nice and I really like it, but are these too few miles? Also, does it seem that it has had a lot of work for such low miles. It seems like there is some good and bad points about all the work that has been done.

Thoughts?

My '03 has 72K. If they didn't have far to drive, then low miles are fine, as long as it didn't just sit.

The laudry list of stuff done just sounds like maintance done at the dealer (ie, new driveshaft vs u-joints).

I'd take a look at it, he doesnt say how much $ he wants, but I would expect that his expectations will be out of line with reality (~$8K).

Sounds like a good truck. Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned with the mileage. My '00 is at 93k and my '99 only has 29,500!

The only question I would have is why after spending all this money are they selling it? The low miles wouldn't put me off (I have an '04 with 66K) but the amount of things that have been replaced is interesting.

I wouldn't be scared of the low miles. My 04 had 25k when I bought it in 08, and it now has 61k. I had to replace my head gaskets at around 48k. Tensioner and idlers were replaced by LR to the updated ones while it was still under factory maintenance.

Well at least the transmission has the new head gaskets..

"Preventive transmission maintenance includes new valve cover seals and updated head gaskets ($3,000);"

If you're concerned about buying a time bomb ask the seller if you can take it to a LR mechanic for inspection. $100 could save you thousands. When I was shopping for Discos I found one I was ready to buy, then had it checked up. There were enough hidden problems to cause me to walk away. On the other hand, if a LR mechanic pronounces it sound, then you can feel more confident about your purchase. Until it drops a sleeve.

I sent him and email and got the following response

thanks for your email.

This Land Rover is in impeccable condition. Some answers to your questions.

I bought the Disco approximately three weeks ago. Unfortunately, my job was terminated unexpectedly and although I would like to keep the Disco, the best option for me right now is to keep my older Jeep (which I had not yet sold).

The former owner is a Land Rover enthusiast, having owned several prior to this vehicle. All records and maintenance are up-to-date as well as preventive maintenance records. As stated, the car has been serviced only at authorized Land Rover dealerships.

The asking price of the Disco is $20,500. I feel confident that there are few Discos that are this immaculate and in this pristine condition

I bought a similar condition '04 SE in 2009 with 47k miles for $9000. The work done doesn't increase the sale price.

Yes, I have done a ton of maintenance work on mine, but I was expecting (and looking forward to) that. I now know things have been done "right", and I have a good idea what will need doing next.

The reason for this guy to sell seems fishy. I bet he has found out something catastrophic and wants to get rid of it ASAP.

If the seller paid anything close to $20K for that truck of his own free will, he needs a psychologist, not a mechanic.

The whole situation sounds suspicious. Then again, his story could be completely true. Ask to see the bill of sale, get the contact information of the previous owner, and go talk to him. If the transaction was only three weeks ago then it should be fresh in everyone's memory. And look at the registration. If the current owner registered it six months ago then his story doesn't hold up.

The seller should be willing to agree to all these requests. If he stands to make $20K from a legitimate transaction he should have no hesitation in providing any of this information. You should point that out to him. If he refuses, then you walk and take a deep breath for having dodged that bullet.

sounds like a 04 that has suffered a oil pump failure and because these are really related to mis located dowel pins the new oil pump may not last any longer.

they know this and thats why they are running away.

I would as well....
