Total Transmission Fluid Exchange

This is how I recently did a 99% exchange of my old grotty, brown tranny fluid on my '95 D1 for an equal amout of new clean, pink delightful fluid:

Parts/Supplies:

3 gallons tranny fluid
funnel that fits tranny dipstick hole
16oz/500ml PET water bottle
Gallon milk jug (or similar)
2 feet (or so) 5/8" ID hose ( old heater hose worked great)
Hose clamp (not really needed)
tranny cooler o-ring (or just re-use)

The Operation:

1. Drain tranny fluid from transmission. Measure the amount of fluid that came out. I got about 1 gallon out of mine. Replace drain bolt. Add as much new fluid as was removed (a gallon or so).

2. Empty water and milk bottles if not already empty. Cut top off water bottle and place under top tranny cooler pipe at radiator (to catch tranny fluid from connection). Remove the tranny cooler pipe from radiator and retrieve the o-ring for re-use (or discard).

3. Attach hose to radiator at the tranny cooler connector (the one at the top of the radiator), Use the hose clamp to secure (I didn't use one). Put the other end of the hose in the empty gallon milk jug. I used milk jugs so I can easily see the level as it fills up. One could re-use empty tranny fluid bottle emptied in step 1.

4. Start the engine and run for about 30 seconds, until you get about a gallon of the old brown glop in the gallon jug. Shut off engine. (be quick because the the gallon jug will fill up pretty fast)

5. Put another gallon of new fluid into the tranny. Empty old fluid from the milk jug (or get another milk jug) and repeat steps 4 and 5 twice more, so that all three gallons of new tranny fluid have been used.

6. Re-connect the tranny cooler pipe to the radiator (don't forget o-ring). Recycle the old tranny fluid.

7. Check fluid level in tranny, adjust if necessary.

Man, I sure would love to do that to mine. I just may tackle it when it gets warmer. Did it shift like 2000% better? LOL

Well, I was hoping for a big change but didn't get much. The slow shifting from 1st-2nd when cold has gone away, and it seems to run a bit cooler, but after 3000 miles, no other changes.

I was hoping that changing the fluid would fix a problem I've had for about 25K miles, and that is the torque converter lock-up doesn't always "lock up". But this problem is still there.

plan on replacing that trans soon....once the fluid goes brown, you should leave it alone.
adding new high detergent fluid will wipe out all the garbage in your housing and quickly plug up those necessary pressure orifaces. ergo no more go....

i's start saving my pennies now and then contact these guys

How many miles do you think it has left?

I'll need more than pennies in the piggy bank if/when the tranny goes... because I'll either replace the whole drivetrain (engine/tranny/xfer box) or dump the rover and buy a replacement, both options appear to involve a large reduction of my bank account.

Not as much as a new vehicle though.

Man, if i could make predictions like that, i wouldn't be wrenching for a living, i'd be a stock broker or betting on the ponies.... :D
but i will say it's limited!

look around, find a used one for under $600
they pop up here all the time.
and do the work yourself, it's an easy straight forward job.

Oh the predictions of dire consequences.

I have done countless tranny fluid swaps (although not as comprehensive as described above), and have yet to suffer any real negative consequences, except for the tranny in my rig which has 215K miles and has been badly abused by towing, wheeling and general lack of attention.
if it were such a bad thing, Land Rover would not make the following statement with respect to trannys, transfer cases, diffs and swivel pin housings "it is essential to change oil much more frequently than indicated if the vehicle is operated under severe conditions, especially if deep wading is carried out". Nor would it be listed as a regular service item on the service schedule (which sadly I cannot lay hands on now as I'm still at home.

Easy, straighforward? Maybe for you, but tranny swaps are the one job I hate on these trucks.

The service schedule says to change the fluid every 30K miles.

I can remember paying to have the tranny fluid changed once, and have done it myself 3 or four times in the 190,000 miles I've driven mine.

In the beginning I was very attentive and tried to fix things as soon as the slightest symptom appeared. Now I just let things go until they blow up, break, or say in a very unambiguous tone "Fix Me Now!"

I'm using the same technique with my marriage. Things have never been better!

marriage and rover transmissions

Good advice. I applaud the advice I have gleaned from this site. I have to go now to the ER to get my head and lip and another spot sewed up; I was not quite quick enough on the "I am so sorry and should have known better ... blah blah. "
but at least my rover will probably get me there ... except now I am a little more worried about that little sound I have ignored for so long.

Well, it's been about 3 1/2 years and 50,000 miles since my last transmission fluid swap, so I did it again.

But this time, I replaced the filter, and used....

Dexron VI full synthetic!

Things have never been better! The intermittent lack of torque-converter-lockup has finally gone away after annoying me for 150K miles, and now the torque converter always locks at 52mph when dropping into overdrive!

Hopefully, this will be the last time I ever need to replace the transmission fluid.

I "cheaped out" a bit and found CarQuest had the cheapest full-synth Dexron VI, so I bought a case of it.

I'll post a sad commentary if I have any regrets in the future about this latest "service".
