A friend of mine called an hour ago - her 2004 Touareg (three months out of the warranty) developed a transmission problem that the dealer says can only be fixed by a complete replacement ($6K).
Is it common? Can the dealer be bypassed? Any sources for used transmissions?

It's been my experience that almost any transmission problem with a VW automatic transmission (that requires the transmission to be pulled or opened) and the dealer's standard response is to replace the transmission and it is almost always ~$6k!

Go to a good independent trans shop. I was quoted the same $6k by the dealer for my VW Eurovan. It cost ~$800 at an independent trans shop to R&R a $5 seal and it's been great for another 80k miles.

I've Been in the VW wrecking business for 20 years. We sell every VW transmission we can get. Fact is thats what almost pays for the purchase of the VW at auction.

Volkswagon has never built a good transmission.

I'm a VW owner from way back and I would say that's true for automatics. Never had a problem with manual transmissions.

All I know is that the Touareg is a damn fine vehicle. Even so, it's just a vehicle. It's got a transmission and electronic crap like anything else.

Damn fine vehicles, though. It's not my personal cup of tea, but it's a hell of a car.

Cheers,

Kennith

John, would you be able to hook me up with one if it is determined that she needs one?

Actually I sell more manuals than automatics. Most the automatics the fluid is so nasty they get sold as cores. It doesn't matter Bug, Bus, Vanagon, Rabbit, Jetta, Golf, Eurovan if it has a good transmission it will sell.

I wish so far at auction any Touareg that I've seen has sold for over $5K. I can't double my money on a wrecked Touareg for that price. If I were you I would shop local. I'm in Oregon and mostly sell to local shops or walkin customers who can take the transmission with them. Long distance issues are a real time killer.

FYI, in order to change the starter, you have to drop the transmission. You may want to check that out too while you are at it.

Thanks Greg - I may know most transmission shops in SD, and I am not that thrilled with any of those. Time of honest people doing simple but honest work has largely passed.

I might call Europarts, see what they got.
