Well you aren't exactly doing anything original with the backpack rack. A full SD style rack without the sides is a good idea. Making the proportions awkward to keep it 'original' is a bad idea. Safety Devices and Voyager make racks that match the body lines. I just googled the Baja rack, and that looks like shit.

I see a similarity in all those racks including the one I'm working on now.

Plain and simple, I might only satisfy 1-5% of the market. I can tell already that you and a few others are in that 95-99%. That doesn't hurt my feelings one bit. That's business and the way of the world. It's no different in the other communities that I build products for. After 12 years of doing this as a hobby and the past 2 years full time I've heard just about everything.....From "That's awesome" to "I like everything, but change these 6 things" to "that looks like hammered dog shit" All in all, I'm still here, building for a specific clientele base and doing extremely well.

I truly appreciate the feedback, I honestly do. I've had as many positive comments on both version of the rack over the past two days as negative, surprisingly.

To each their own.

Thanks again,

Jason

If your building for that 5% then your gonna have a tough go of it...

Looks ok, your always gonna have input when you post your shit on a public forums. For what it's worth, Land Rover owners on one hand are the cheapest bastards you'll ever face, but bitch like schoolgirls when it's the not the way "it should look"...

I know your pain
Stay away from 90source...

I personally think 1.25. 095 looks better...

FYI...I'm in finishing this, started as a Rockware bolt on but built a custom frame and had to make it so guys bigger and taller than a midget could sit in it...

That 5% is truly all I'm interested in and even selling a rack or bumper occasionally is ok as well. I have plenty of work and orders from my other communities. I never had any Rover products on my website and receive as many inquiries on non-existent products than items I offer. So, I know there is a need/want for some Rover owners out there.

Rover guys are no different than LandCruiser, Patrol and E-Bronco guys when it comes to $$... I unlike a majority of the fabricators out there will build custom one-off items for what most charge for a standard produced inventory item.

I stay away from communities that China mass produces for. Jeep, Nissan Exterra, newer Toyota SUVs, Hummer.... and MOST truck applications. There is huge volume, but NO money there. You will work your ass to death for a fraction of the profits.

I'm not familiar with 90Source?

Thanks,

Jason

Looking good! I hope you stick around the board.

I have no dog in this fight as I don't own a D1/D2 but if I did, I would want a clone of a SD lowlander rack, only better built with more floor support. I'd have it COLORZINQ dipped, then painted.

Thanks,

I'm in Green River, Wyoming. My wife is from the Poughkeepsie area and went to Syracuse.

I have no use for bad attitudes. It doesn't help me, my family or my customers one bit.

At the end of the day it makes me feel good that someone is getting a product they want and chose me to make it for them.

Feel free to buzz/PM anytime.

Thanks for the input on the SD rack Chris.

I'm on a few of the Rover boards now and don't plan on going anywhere. ;) I'm not new to public forums, been around them for over 10 years and have lost track of the thousands of posts I've made. Many build threads, technical help, misc projects and friends I've been fortunate enough to acquire in the process.

Racks for DI/II are just the beginning. Hope to have a full line for a few other Rover models as well.

Thanks for having me,

Jason

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to bash you or your design, I'm just offering my opinion on what would make it look like it is made for the vehicle. This isn't ExPo, so it may seem odd that you are getting more criticism than compliments.

This guy has the most mature and beneficial attitude we've seen in years.

Rack looks good, I really like the mounting feet. Only critique is that the mounting feet really need to line up with the A, B, C, and D pillars for aesthetic continuity. One would also imagine that these locations would be ideal from a support strength standpoint.

I've had the SD low rack and I currently have a KVT backpack rack that is slowly rusting away on my D2.

Blue, thank you for the kind words and your input.

Yes, now that the front of the rack has been revised I will be able to get the B, C and D pillar dead centered and the A pillar slight back of center.

I started on my rear bumper this morning. Should have the base model pretty close to complete by Monday. Sliders are coming right after.

Hope all of you have a Merry Christmas and hope your stockings are filled with all the goodies they can hold.

If you do ever make a full rack with sides, please make it so that a sheet of plywood fits between the rails. An SD rack is just slightly too small so that if the plywood works its way between the rails it is very difficult to get out. That was one of the reasons I replaced my SD (after a tree fell on it) with a Hannibal.

If the one above had side rails, the floor plan is (ID X ID) 52" x 85". The width of a sheet of plywood is always in the R&D designs... HA! :D

I agree. I've been looking to replace my chicken coop flooring with sheet rock.

These feet are just for R&D. I have a different version at the laser cutter now. Will be more hourglass/hippy looking.

This rack will never be sold. It will end up being cut apart after I have it where I want it. Too many cuts and tacks. I like 2 cut/welds per perimeter. I'd shoot for one cut/weld if I could get tube in longer lengths.
