transfer case - can't shift into low 00DII

Having trouble shifting into low gear on our 00 DII.

I did a search here, and said the solenoild may be bad, or connections or something (all seemed to require surgery to get to). Apparently the xfer case does not know when the truck is in 'N' I guess.

Is there any somewhat easy workaround that can be done from inside the car?

This happened last year too, and I was stuck in low, pulling the boat out of the water, far from home.... I kept playing with it, even invented new curse words!! Eventually it just started working!

I recently tried to get it back into low, in my driveway, and the shifter did not budge.

Just looking to see if there is an on-the-road fix (or a workaround ) to get you home, instead of being f*cked at the boat ramp again!!

Mine is stiff too.

Get it rolling below 5 mph, put transmission in neutral, and try the hi/low. It should move easier.

You can also put the t case in neutral, put the transmission in drive, give it a bit of gas, put the transmisssion back in neutral, and then put the t-case in gear.

Try to work it at least once a month to keep it freed up.

I mean mine will not move at all. last time I did it (last year), when it moved, it moved easily, but otherwise it felt 'locked', not stiff, but totally locked

sounds like the solenoid ... your searches will tell you what to do ... I went in from the top while I did the CDL install, but other guys claim it's not too bad to go from underneath after pulling the driveshaft ...

Be careful, the reason I had the console out was because the owner had busted the stamped steel piece on the linkage, trying to shift the damned thing.....

So did I.......a little strip steel a welder and I was good to go.......this little piece will not break again....

Update on this problem. Needed a new transmission. When the Xfer case was out, I had the mechanic remove the solenoid. Good to go now! Works like a charm again!

I just pulled a solenoid last weekend. I can't see how you could do it from beneath. It was hard enough to do from above.
......

Pull the driveshaft and E brake drum and reach over the top. A PITA but can be done without pulling the top off.

Cheers,

Mike

even my 04 just gave me a problem in the last snow storm...the real answer to this issue is to use the diff lock selector a couple of times a month to ensure it doesn't seize up through lack of use...I also liberally spray the linkage with WD40 or similar...but as I say...even I had an issue a few weeks ago...and of course it was COLD and snowy...so not about to go crawling underneath it till the spring now!

If you don't shift it frequenty it can sieze up. In cold temps, splashing water and humidity will freeze up the linkage.

Take the truck on a long drive, then let it sit with the engine running and allow the heat to soak, that will free up most ice or rust locked shifters with a bit of brute force added in.
