Transfer Case Slop/Clanking

I've had several Rovers and they all do it...some worse than others... the clank from park to drive or from park to reverse. Has anyone ever diagnosed what is actually going on? Wear and tear or something internally that is failing mechanically?

I replaced all motor/tranny mounts and upgraded to Tom Woods shafts w/ double cardon up front hoping that would help a bit but actually made it worse. Rear diff is good with a Detroit, up front is stock and has a bit of play but majority of the slop is from the TF case.

Appreciate the input.

normal gear backlash through the drivetrain. It all amplifies to the tcase and clunks. Later d2's seem to do it a little less in my experience.

If you do a search on this forum you'll find some info. I have the same issue and when I was looking into it more seriously I think I learned that the culprit was the transfer case output shaft and possibly the output bearing. But it's been a while since I did my research and my brain could use an oil change.

Joey how many degrees of backlash do you think it has?

My 95 probably has 45 degrees

I can tell you that the splines for the cross drilled input gear were perfect on my 96 and my 97 and I think they have way more miles than your red one, so I doubt that is the problem. I think RAVE suggested one of the auto clutches if there is backlash, I kind of think thats my problem since I can make the transmission slip pretty easily.

I have a case in my parts truck and the backlash is pretty tight but the end play is a good bit. Is that normal?
