I bought a 2004 a month ago , The tranny was making a whining noise recently . Its slipping from first to second . I checked the fluid , all cherry red ! It was down a quart so added one and its still the same . The dealer I got it from said its a softwhare problem ,and they have to upload something . Sounds like bullshit to me ! The truck only has 53 k on it. Any thoughts ?

When it shifts from first to second . and also down when comming to a stop . getting like a delay . I think second could be wiped out I fond a tow hitch in the storage compartment . It looks like someone was using it quite a bit . I checked under the radiator shroud and found no tranny cooler . I could be fucked !

I'd keep investigating before doing anything, if it were me. Just wanted to add my .02 that while I don't specifically know about the tranny problem, plenty of other Disco-related ills end up having to do with too-sensitive software. So there's at least a *slight* chance that word of a 'software' problem isn't bullshit. I'd want to read the TSB or something else (like here) before even inching toward that possibility though.

Jesus Thom, how many variations of engine ECU firmware are there alone?

There were what, 82 for the Lucas trucks?

thats very diffwerent from a software issue as in the ones that the LR3 and new RR suffer from where they keep updating the actual software.

I think his comment is just BS

to further my comment

If a 4hp 22 or 24 is slipping between 1-2 2-3 or 3-4 there isnt anything software will fix.

if the TC is not locking correctly maybe but for the actual gear changes I dont happen to think so.

maybe we will luck out and Ian or Dave will read this and chime in, I aprreciate thier posts .

My tranny went out by first whining then slipping then the tc woujldnt lock then pow pow she was dead. it would slip a little cold and slip more and more and more when hot.

IF a power trans flush was done, that could have blown out the seals...
and IIRC there is no software updating on the modules. the TCM is a Bosch unit and they are only programmable to either gas or diesel.

PT, when I cleared adaptions on mine, it shifted different, but yeah it was a worthless 3 minuites...

(Actually i think there is a cruise control update, but that is all I know about...)

Any one know the difference between the 4HP22 and 4HP24? I'm guessing the 4HP22 is the one in the Disco.

I'm bring this thread back because I think I am having this issue right now beteen 3-4.

I've been trying to get answers via this thread http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=65276&highlight=slipping+transmission

I've found an '04 tranny with 36k miles for around $800 but I think the only place that will do a transmission install on this vehicle in this area besides the dealer is AAMCO. They won't give me a quote on rebuild or labor to install the tranny I found until they do one more test drive. This time I've arraged for me to do the test drive to duplicate the problem. I hope I can solve the vibration issue and the slipping issue a the same time. I'll have them inspect the transfer case and the mounts as well. To be on the safe side I also ordered a new Rotoflex for the rear driveshaft.

I was just going to post on a similar issue. I've been noticing something weird with how my tranny works. It shifts nice and smooth but on downshifts from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st the RPMs will jump up and drop by about 500rmp a few seconds after the downshift. Is that normal? The truck is an 02 DII with 150K miles. Does the torque converter lock up in 1st and 2nd or only 4th?
